Kantounia offers touristic accommodation in two independent traditional stone buildings in Kalamoti, one of the most well-known mastic villages of Chios. The owner, an architect, has restored them with great care and made sure they retain their distinct character while offering comfort and serving all possible needs. You will love its architecture, local flavours, orchards and tranquillity! They were named Kantounia, which means ‘cobblestoned streets’, reflecting the character of the medieval settlement that charms the visitor with its routes. The external wall of both buildings is part of the fortifications of the village, which date from the Genoese times (14th century). The village lies 25 km away from the city of Chios (Hora), which accounts for half an hour by car. From here you can access very easily the famous Komi beach, as well as other beautiful beaches and villages in Southern Chios. The location of Kantounia is ideal for calm holidays, explorations around the island and for getting to know better the life, the festivals and customs of a Chian village.
The owner of Kantounia, Maria, is an architect with a long experience both in new and old construction. She runs the business together with her daughter Kalliopi, who is also an architect interested in history and heritage.
Kantounia is a great base to discover the whole of the island. Chios has so much to offer to the traveller: historical sites, architectural wonders, beautiful landscapes, undiscovered beaches, clean waters, good food, and much more! The south is dotted with Mastic Villages, like Kalamoti, Mesta, Pirgi, Olympoi, Lithi, Armolia. Most of them preserve their medieval fabric. During the summer months in the countryside you will notice the mastic trees letting their valuable ‘tears’ fall on the white ground. Moving to the centre of the island, Kampos offers traces of a different architectural and economic wonder - the mansions and citrus tree orchards. Dating from the Genovese period (14th - 16th centuries) and continuing their activity until the 20th century, they will amaze you with their red-yellow stone walls, their cisterns and sophisticated interiors. Citrus Museum offers a full experience. Don’t miss Nea Moni, an 11th century Byzantine monastery, and the nearby villages of Avgonyma and Anavatos!
