Agios Nikolaos is a cosmopolitan and international town with a population of 12,000 inhabitants that attracts thousands of visitors each year, making it one of the most popular destinations in northeastern Crete. The city's most beautiful jewel is the lake, where legend has it that Athena and Artemis once bathed. It is connected to the sea by a narrow canal, and the natural surroundings of red rocks and trees make it a popular attraction for visitors. The small theater by the lake hosts interesting artistic and sporting events each year. A stroll through the lovely shops and boutiques of Agios Nikolaos is always pleasant, and visitors can purchase local products and various items of Cretan tradition and crafts, such as textiles, jewelry, ceramics, and more.
