Pett Level (where David Bowie filmed the video for his 1980 hit Ashes to Ashes), is a sleepy, crowd-free stretch of the East Sussex coastline between Hastings and Rye. At high tide wild swimmers take a dip and at low tide there are fossilised tree stumps of a prehistoric forest and cliff End is littered with dinosaur footprints. Perfectly situated for family friends to explore the local towns of Hastings (quirky shops, a contemporary Art Gallery and fisherman’s Huts)and Rye (cobbled streets) and has fantastic walks around the countryside and along the cliffs to Fairlight. The walks along the Grand Military Canal are particularly picturesque and offer lots of opportunities for watching an amazing array of birds. Rye harbour and the nature reserve with the new Discovery Centre are worth exploring. Apart from the local pubs, The Two Sawyers, and The Royal Oak in Pett and the Cove, in Fairlight, there are numerous great pubs and restaurants to sample.
