Gordon and Elaine
The Byre is a self contained studio apartment located just 3 minutes from the A30. Within easy reach of Dartmoor National Park, the Two Moors Way, cathedral city of Exeter and the coast, this property is a little gem. Sympathetically renovated in 2019, it retains the original oak beams, inglenook fireplace and undulating cob walls which are up to a metre thick. Our central heating ensures you have a cosy stay but feel free to light the wood burner to enhance your visit in the winter months. Adjacent to the main house, this was a former coach house for the Trafalgar route and in the 18th century, a pub called the Ring of Bells. We have one pub in the village, a local shop which sells a wide variety of products, children's play park and bus stop, all within a five minute walk. In whichever direction you drive, pubs and beautiful scenery await you. Nearby is Drakes Farm Shop for local meat, bread and vegetables and has a cafe and farm animals. Our property has recently (2021) had a smart TV and bed settee added and Wifi Ethernet cable to improve reception. Unfortunately like many rural areas, our internet is not as fast as towns but boosters have improved reception.
We are a retired couple and have lived in Cheriton Bishop for over 30 years. We love travel and frequently house sit for families and their pets throughout Europe. Elaine was a Home Economist and Gordon an Environmental Scientist. Alongside these careers, they were involved with training students for Moorwalking, consequently they can advise you if you wish to explore Dartmoor. There are OS walking and cycling maps available for your use. There are 3 popular cycle routes within a 30 minute drive, Okehampton to Lydford gorge, Exeter to the coast and Merton to Barnstaple and beyond. All have nearby cycle hire shops. With such easy assess to the A30, The Byre is ideally placed for exploring Devon. We are usually available in the main house but occasionally will be away. The key will be in a 'lock' box for easy access.
Whether you enjoy walking on Dartmoor, visiting the coast or visiting local National Trust properties such as Castle Drogo, Cheriton Bishop is at the heart of Devon. We have a selection of laminated OS maps which you are welcome to borrow and suggested walks. There are several cycle trails, the Exe Estuary trail, Okehampton to Lydford ( Granite Way ) and the Dartmoor Way which is 95 miles. Locked bike storage is available. The Dartmoor Walking Festival starts on August 28th, 2021 for a week. Guided walks available but we recommend early booking due to the cancellation last year. Exeter has an airport, railway and bus station. We are fortunate to have several local buses which stop about 5 minutes walk from the property. These travel to Exeter where connections will take you to the Jurassic coast and many coastal towns. In the other direction, buses take you to the North Cornwall coast.
