Property information

INCLUDED IN THE STAY: Vilkman with all its' features, final cleaning of the cottage, bed linen and Museum tickets. LOCATION: The cottage is located on the hillside about 300m from the mill museum info. The cottage offers a magnificent view of the Verlala river and is accessible by car. SAUNA 1 AND SHIFTS: Vilkman, Leivo and Seppä-Mäki have a shared sauna. Vilkman is located uphill from the sauna building. Accommodation includes one sauna shift per day. HISTORY: The cottage is named after Aaret Vilkman, who together with her daughters' families were the longest-standing residents of VB 4. VB 4 was probably built before the 1890s and was originally owned by the miller Pukkila. In the 1890s the house was rented to tailor Mikko Karhu (Rustholl-Karhu), whose wife was a relative of miller Pukkila. The Karhu lived in the house until the early 1910s, when they moved out of Verla. Aaret Vilkman moved into VB 4 after the Karhu. Aaret and her daughter's families were the longest-standing residents of the building. Aaret died in 1941 and his wife in 1959. Their son Eino was killed in action in 1943. Daughter Saima lived in the house with her husband Erkki Stenberg in VB 4 until 1954. Emma Nygren, a pensioner from the Kymi Company, the last occupant of the house, lived there for about ten years. Repovalkea Oy is responsible for the reservation management and maintenance of the Verla cottages, which are owned and maintained by UPM-Kymmene Oyj. The sites are part of the World Heritage.

Neighbourhood information

VERLA’S INDUSTRIAL SETTING AS PART OF WORLD HERITAGE Verla was added to the World Heritage List in 1996 on the basis of criterion (iv): the Verla Groundwood and Board Mill and its associated habitation are an outstanding and remarkably well-preserved example of the small-scale rural industrial settlement associated with pulp and board production that flourished in northern Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries, of which only a handful survive to the present day. VISITING THE MUSEUM The Verla Mill Museum, consisting of the groundwood and board mill, can be visited only as part of a guided tour. Visitors with reduced mobility can take part in a partial tour with the group. Guided tours in Finnish begin on the hour. Tours in other languages are available by arrangement. THE WORLD HERITAGE AREA Visitors can explore the history- and forest-themed trails of the Verla World Heritage site on their own, as well as view the site’s prehistoric rock paintings. The Mill Museum’s gardener leads guided tours of the mill owner’s garden. Admission to the site’s exhibitions is free. Downstairs from the customer service desk, you will find a small permanent exhibition, and opposite that, in the fire equipment shed, is information about the mill’s fire-fighting team. An exhibition about log driving is on display in the frame saw building, and the bale warehouse in the middle of the museum site houses temporary exhibitions. An exhibition at the Lippu Homestead depicts millworkers’ housing. SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS Local artisans display their wares in the small shops and workshops of the museum site. They offer a wide selection of goods, from organic bread to sweets, from knitwear to ceramics, glassware and handmade paper. A café serving lunch operates in the Verla warehouse during the summer. There is also a wine shop that organises tastings. REPOVESI-VERLA Repovesi National Park, one of Finland’s most important natural sites, is half an hour’s drive away.
