Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'. Finlay Jack's Backpackers is one of my favourite hostels ever. The common areas, such as the inner courtyard garden, are very inviting and adapted to facilitate socialising and getting to know your fellow travellers. A very nice detail is that already upon your arrival your name is hand-written on a little blackboard next to your bed, which makes you feel even more welcome and which makes the contact with your room mates easier. The staff are friendly and helpful, for example to book some activity in Taupo.

The area is popular for skiing and cycling, in addition, ski equipment hire and bike hire are available at this hostel.

Taranaki Falls is 48 km from the hostel. The nearest airport is Taupo Airport, 43 km from Tongariro River Retreat. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They will help give you a ride, find a ride, or find a shuttle for Tongariro Alpine Crossing. They will even connect you with other hostel people who maybe travelling the same way as you. One worker helped carry my bag and took me to where to take the Intercity bus. Staff really made the stay an amazing experience. Thank you!

Had the twin room with bathroom. Cute kitchenette included, good beds, warm. Free parking included. The Café downstairs has fair prices for what you can get and the personnel is super friendly. We Germans don't say "Amazing!" very often, but when we do, we mean it. Cheers and thanks for having us.

Based by the Lake offers basic dormitory-style rooms or private guest bedrooms with ensuite facilities. All of the accommodation is clean and modern and linen is included. Communal facilities include a shared kitchen. You can also soak up the sun on the sundeck which features views of the mountains. Location was close to the lake, the food, the supermarket, everything. Amenities (kitchen and laundry) were clean and well thought out. Enjoyed the girls only dorm with the extra perk of a private balcony.
