Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'. Great kitchen with all the appliances you would need, lots of dining room space and comfy hangout area, the pod rooms were amazing. So much privacy and such a good concept. Bathrooms were also clean and always fully stocked.

The area is popular for skiing and cycling, in addition, ski equipment hire and bike hire are available at this hostel.

Taranaki Falls is 48 km from the hostel. The nearest airport is Taupo Airport, 43 km from Tongariro River Retreat. The owner is a tremendous bloke, he's not in it for anything other than to help people out. He has a knack of prempting any potential problems you might have and finds the solution, I would say a man for all seasons. His staff also very nice as are his children.

At the hostel the rooms come with a shared bathroom and bed linen. Thomas and Tracy are great people. They help you with whatever you need and they welcome you warmly in their place. It was really easy to book shuttle and carparking for Tongariro with them. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and homey. You can play a lot of games at lobby and watch netflix. This was highlight of staying in NZ, lovely place with lovely people :)

The property offers a range of accommodation from budget dormitories to private rooms spread over 3 lodges and complimentary unlimited WiFi. it is very clean and comfy. the staff are super helpful and friendly. We were late behind the schedule and we could not message them because of the poor network, luckily they have arranged our key in reception. This is definitely the best place you want stay when you travel around the national park.

The staff is very friendly and willing to help you. It has a great location.

Cleanest hostel we have stayed in, easy late check in, really fun layout, and centrally located.

Based by the Lake offers basic dormitory-style rooms or private guest bedrooms with ensuite facilities. All of the accommodation is clean and modern and linen is included. Communal facilities include a shared kitchen. You can also soak up the sun on the sundeck which features views of the mountains. Very friendly staff who were more than accommodating, central location with wonderful view of the lake! Lovely restaurant next door linked to the hostel. Lovely atmosphere, food and drink!

At the hostel, all rooms are fitted with a wardrobe and a TV. At Rusty Nail Backpackers rooms have air conditioning and a shared bathroom. Super quiet and cozy. Got some good sleep and enjoyed my time here. Nice place out in the country where the owners live up top and the hostel is down below. Has a map where you can pin where you are coming from, which I did. I think that makes 4 people for Florida. They have a full kitchen available and a clothes washer. I think they have gotten less visitors post pandemic and I don’t normally write reviews but thought I’d let the pubic know this place is clean and I had a great time.
