Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'.
The hostel is in a peaceful central location with a well equipped, spacious commercial style kitchen that guests can use to cook their own meals. The ensuite bathroom in dormitory room was very convenient.

The hidden TV room was a really good suprise!

Super quiet and cozy. Got some good sleep and enjoyed my time here. Nice place out in the country where the owners live up top and the hostel is down below. Has a map where you can pin where you are coming from, which I did. I think that makes 4 people for Florida. They have a full kitchen available and a clothes washer. I think they have gotten less visitors post pandemic and I don’t normally write reviews but thought I’d let the pubic know this place is clean and I had a great time.

Great location for what we wanted to do. Good facilities, backpackers kitchen, bar, restaurant and lounge areas to relax in. Spa pool was nice.
Great location. Best shower we’ve ever had. Great temperature and pressure. Coffee for a plunger and real milk. Warm room. Secure locking if rooms so we felt safe.
Big hostel but the manager keeps the capacity limited, so that your dorm is never full - max. 2-3 people per dorm! Cute cat and dog onsite. I could borrow a bicycle for free! You can also book Tongariro transport very cheaply. The best WiFi I've encountered in a long time. If you need to do something online, this is your place!
Location is fantastic and facilities are basic for a cheap stay.
Perhaps the most comfortable bed we‘ve ever slept in. We slept like babies despite the fact that we had to get up at 5 am to catch a shuttle to Tongariro. We arrived late and were able to check in via a keybox. Aside from that it‘s more like a Youth Hostel. All needed facilities can be found. Power plugs are working. It‘s no luxury, but for the price a solid place to rest your limbs.
Great courtyard set-up which felt safe with a relaxed vibe.Everything seemed to work and staff were very helpful. Grateful for a discount with my Scottish Youth Hostel card.
Really like the privacy of curtains on the bunk beds and how sturdy they were. Also the convenience of a plug in each bunk for charging devices safely. lockable cupboards for possessions were good. The hostel had a welcoming and friendly vibe and good for socialising but not too loud late in the night too, so a great balance as a solo traveller. Facilities clean and tidy, cleaned well every morning.

great location. Good restaurant for breakfast and dinner. this is a budget place but is great value for money. it accommodates backpackers and our room was near the shared kitchen and dining room which was a a bit noisy. do not go there for Fancy but for the location and staff friendliness
Skotel is in the most beautiful location - the wilderness is on the doorstep.... just step outside and start hiking. The staff are wonderful, the rooms are great (either backpacker budget or hotel style) and the restaurant is 10/10. Room prices and restaurant prices are excellent value - nothing like city prices here! This was my third visit to Skotel - I look forward to it every time. It is also a great place to meet new people - guests mingle easily and share their day in the wonderful environment of the National Park.
