I definitely recommend Yamagata Guesthouse. The bedroom is clean and comfortable, there’s a locker for big luggage and a good heating system. There’s good shower/bathroom installations and the kitchen is spacious and very well equipped (both located on the ground floor).
Also, the staff is friendly and welcoming, they own a mochi shop that I recommend checking it out!
It is located in Link Murayama, a renovated Prefectural school and during the day is open to the public. You can search it and see how interesting the place is!
The time I was there, they offered free transportation to the beautiful Ginzan Onsen!! Which was greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the lovely time I spent there!

Probably one of my favourite hostel in Japan and I've been to MANY. There are not many affordable hostel in Yamagata area much less one that is walking distance from Yamagata JR Station. It's around 10mins walk from the station and walking distance from major city attraction. Clean and affordable facilities. Toilets & shower room with full set of toiletries are at level 1.
The hostel staffs cooks a free dinner that is available to all guests every night and it was a great homey experience interacting with the staff and guests. The shared space also has a cozy wood stove and cats!
There is ample parking space in front of the house and a lovely Japanese garden behind. The staffs were all very kind and friendly and my room was simple and tidy with all the basic facilities I need.

A lovely and heartwarming place to stay for a winter getaway.
The couple that owns this business made us feel like family. Mao and Qu are so kind and welcoming. They treated us like family. They picked us up from the bus station, drove us to a wonderful dinner location (which they recommended), drove us to the ski resort, and helped with all our luggage. I was so happy to meet them and talk with them.
The room is just as warm as the owners. The floors are heated and the beds are very comfortable. I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

The staff was courteous, the room was spacious, the temple grounds was serene and natural, and the overall atmosphere refreshing and unexpectedly amiable, especially the monk. He added our names into his prayers !

This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

The food was amazing! I came here for Christmas to see some snow and stayed 2 nights. Both nights the food was soo good and there was soo much. I also had breakfast included and that was good too. The hosts are lovely and even with the language barrier we used translate apps to talk and I had a great time. The house is old and wooden with kerosene heaters, its not super fancy but the blankets on the bed were warm and fluffy, so with a belly full of great food and snow falling outside I slept really well. They even drove me to the bus terminal the day I left. 10/10 highly recommend, especially for the food.

I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.

Great location, walking distance to most Sakata attractions. Friendly staff plus the 24 hr spa most appreciated.
Great location, 5 mins by foot to the ski lift, great sauna, staff removed snow from my car, good breakfast, clean and quiet room, great view of the forest
Great location, cool little view, there is parking at the back of the building which was really cheap.
Cozy rooms, friendly host, great location
Lovely hosts, great location, clean spacious traditional rooms, electric heater available, nice view from the window, well appointed kitchen, and friendly dining room.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Meigetsuso, Mayuka was our hostess who served our meals, she was charming and helpful and very informative in describing the many dishes served at each meal. The private hot spring bath in the room was a welcome and relaxing feature. We also enjoyed the private rock bath that is available.
Mintaro Guesthouse offers an experience which cannot easily be found! After my arrival I was asked to attend dinner with the host, staff and other guests to enjoy food and drinks. The dinner was donation-based and featured a variety of delicious food and some guests even pitched in and would prepare a special dish or offer some top quality sake. I had a wonderful time talking and eating with everyone. It was like being part of a family!
Great location and close to the city center.
Our hosts were lovely! Fabulous drying room and great location. Japanese breakfast was delightful. Loved the collection of music equipment and eclectic wall hangings
