Beautiful large lava house on a private rugged grass and fruit tree property in a quiet neighbourhood with a wonderful view but still within walking distance of the small charming town where groceries and coffee on the lookout can be found. A restaurant and "La Cabana", a dreamy chill-out bar tucked in the trees with stunning views is a 10 min walk towards town. A cul-de-sac is 5 minutes on foot the other way where at the end of the road you can sit on the lava retaining wall and listen to the pounding of the waves as the Sun dips below the horizon. Here you can contemplate the mysteries of life, if you are so inclined.
The owner gave us a warm welcome and a tour of his extensive property. He was a charming and affable fellow, clearly spoken with a sense of humor, speaking and looking like the quintessential Azorean native gentleman we encountered frequently in our travels; willing to do anything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The kitchen came with all amenities. The TV might as well have had an inch of dust on it for all the good it served, for who would watch when nature, this pristine beggars the sense of awe of beauty overwhelming the senses.
The upstairs sitting area and downstairs bedroom were comfortable and came with everything. The whole house was clean as a whistle. The hot showers had good pressure and worked well. The trap door was a fun, novel way to go from the first floor to the lower floor. One could eat in the 'backyard' at a wooden table, the front yard on a round stone lava table, inside at the clear epoxied rough hewn timber table (really a nice touch) or under a tent behind the house for a larger group. A hammock in a shady corner was so inviting after a full day's activities. Little green lizards were frequent guests outside during 'happy hour' or mealtimes.
Shearwaters, large nocturnal birds circled overhead each evening 'singing' their haunting calls.
Offering garden views, Quinta do Basalto in Piedade features accommodations, a garden, and barbecue facilities. The property provides free private parking.
