Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests. What a great find this place was. A very traditional Japanese guest house with ultra friendly and accommodating hosts. This property has been in their family for generations and they go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The meals were excellent and there was an English explanation for each dish served 😊. A big bonus is the short walk to the stairs to climb Mt Haguro. (Not that that makes the stairs any easier!) We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay here!

The hosts were so accommodating and it was an amazing experience staying in a Daishinbo. Very close to the start of the walking trail to Mount Haguro. The variety of beautiful food that was served was incredible. On the whole a fantastic experience and one I would highly recommend

大聖坊 Daishobo offers accommodations in Tsuruoka, 29 miles from Shinjō Station. The air-conditioned accommodation is 15 miles from Kamo Aquarium. I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.
