It was a very old hotel (100 years!), so expect slightly crumbly window frames and no air conditioning (not 100% sure about this - you'd have to ask) - but the San Francisco climate is cool, so you don't need aircon! - and you can open the windows, which I love! The bed was super comfy and there was lots of space - the room was lovely and bright and the bathroom was too, all very old-fashioned, which is what I like. On the last day I was able to leave my suitcase at reception for a few hours after check-out for free while I saw some last sights, and all the receptionists were super friendly! There is a good fridge in the room, and a coffee machine (I didn't try this, as I brought my own kettle with me). I also didn't try the restaurant, but it was on the ground floor of the hotel. I just loved everything really! It's very rare to find a traditonal hotel like this nowadays, at a price I could just about afford, and it was perfectly positioned, very close to Powell station, from where you can get everywhere easily. The manager was lovely, and I would definitely go back!

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded on 3 sides by water, it is spread over steep hills that make for great photo opportunities. None better than the zig-zag Lombard Street seen in many a film. Other movie stars are the streetcars plying the hill climbs – a little touristy, but still worth trying.
In the middle of the bay is Alcatraz island, famed for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t fancy going inside, the views towards the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere in San Francisco is life more laidback than on the Pacific beaches. Hire a bike and head out there via the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. The clam chowder served in (yes, actually in!) bread is a delight. Chinatown also has a great selection of good value restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want to stay in apartments along those lines, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something to suit. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here.

We rode the cable car, ate at Pat’s Cafe, and took a cab to the cruise terminal at the pier. Everything was delightful and a new experience for all of us. We would loved to have had more time to explore the city.

We loved our mini trip to San Francisco.
We loved our mini trip to San Francisco. We stayed just one night but squeezed in a lot during our trip. Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Trams, Golden Gate bridge and much much more. Keep an eye out for the Waymo cars that initially look like google maps cars, but in fact they are driverless taxis.....sign up in advance and you will be able to try them out yourself, sadly we got our invite after we had left. Nothing can prepare you for the steepness of the hills in SF so with a 4yo in tow we used Ubers to get around the city. Would love to come back some time, maybe without a little one so we could investigate the nightlife of San Francisco.

We were in SF to go to the opera. Only over a weekend.
We were in SF to go to the opera. Only over a weekend. Parked the car through valet parking (independent of the hotel) and left it there the whole time (expensive!). Used Uber and it made things efficient and effortless. We ate at a local Japanese/Korean restaurant of no pretense and good food. Above, I mentioned that we didn't stay in the room we booked....they gave us an upgrade because they noticed we have some problems of mobility and they made sure that the room was as convenient as possible.

My first vist of an american city.
My first vist of an american city. Mixted feeling of Beauties, whealth and extreme poverty.
Avoid tenderloin as, according to locals, this is a very unsafe place (homeless and drug).
Do visit pier 9, pier 39, the golden gate.
Take the muni card for most public transportation, also buy the cliper card to access "non muni" public transportation (including bus 130): this is valid if you want to ake the buss across the goldengate to sausalito or to come back with the ferry from sausalito directly to pier 41, while passing along alcatraz (14 dolars). There is also the option to bike from pier 41 to the goldengate, sausalito then back with the ferry. Very nice activity to do in familly. Dont forget to visit the point of view at the top of the goldengate (pacific side), on the way down, there is a road going bellow the bridge to sausalito only accessible to bikes and pedestrians (1h+ walk). Very quiet, beautifull view on the bridge and old eucaliptus. Take a good jacket: june temp around 13-18c with very strong wind everywhere. My day was sunny and I was burned by the sun, so take care with young childrens (sun protection).

There is lots to see in the City and surrounding areas.
There is lots to see in the City and surrounding areas. It was pretty clean for a large American City. The internationally renowned sites (Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Cable Cars etc.) did not disappoint for a first time visit.
Staying out of the core of the City is advised unless you want to see the most unfortunate of people with severe drug problems. Ask which areas to avoid.
Taking a local tour such as the buses that allow you to get off and on at various stops is recommended at least once, at the beginning of your trip.
I would like to go back to San Francisco again.

Great restaurants although the added fees ie taxes tips etc are too high and discouraging. For example I usually eat at Sears an historic restaurant next to the Chancellor. However, I took my two grandsons there for breakfast and my bill came to $77 but with the add ons totaled $101. Needless to say I won't be having breakfast there again.
Using public transportation is another plus. It's relatively cheap and as a senior I travel free. Great way to get around town and to see the city.
Fisherman's Wharf is always crowded but there are some cool shops like a poster store and a hot sauce store. Japantown also has great shopping. Cheesecake Factory has great view of the city.
Noticeable police presence around Union Square.
Beautiful facilities and exceptional, caring staff. Our room was immaculate, comfortable, and very tastefully decorated. We had a wonderful view of Union Square and the financial district. The location could not have been better as all of the “best shopping” in San Francisco was mere steps from the hotel. We ate both dinner and breakfast at Anzu Restaurant where the food was absolutely delicious and service first class. We loved everything about Hotel Nikko and highly recommend it!
Hotel G was excellent! The location is perfect, very close to Union Square. With the increased homelessness in and around San Francisco we wanted to be sure to find a safe hotel - and this felt exactly like this! Right from the secured and part-time personnel guarded door to the helpful reception staff we found this hotel to be a great pick. Would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a clean, spacious room smack in the middle of an otherwise busy city.
We liked everything about this hotel! It is a gem right in Union Square, very secure (24-hour security at the entrance), and so easy to get around from this location. My only regret is that we didn't have time to enjoy their lounge area. The rooms are really cute! Just one little tip - I might not stay there with someone I'm not 100% open with as you hear literally everything from the bathroom 🙈🙉. It was a great spot for us and would highly recommend.
This hotel is in a superb location, just a few steps away from Union Square and very close to the cable car line to Fisherman's Wharf. Being in a city, the rooms are a little smaller than you would normally get but they are still a good size, clean and homely after a long day out sight seeing. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we would most definitely stay here again when visiting San Francisco.
Friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful staff makes the Beresford Arms a wise choice in the Bay Area. Clean, spacious rooms, great city views, in a location that is full of things to do, restaurants galore; Union Square, Chinatown, Nob Hill and North Beach neighborhoods are within easy walking distance. We’ve stayed at both Beresford properties and they are our go-to hotels when staying in San Francisco!
The location was perfect for a solo traveler. It’s felt safe, restaurants near by, and the best pasty, very close to the ferry building and the walking path along the water! Other walkable areas within 20 min or so were to Oracle Park for a Giants game and Union Square for some shopping!
The staff were also super friendly and very helpful in recommendations as it was my first time in SF.
Good location on the Union Square edge of Chinatown and a 20 minute walk to North Beach and SOMA. The hotel feels boutique-y and smaller than it is, with rooms that are nicely appointed and a very comfy bed. While we were in town there was the annual Lunar Festival a few blocks over so the area was especially lively with street carnivals, food and musical performances.
It's a beautiful property with wonderful staff. And dogs! The location was great....close to Union Square, good shopping, and Swan Oyster Depot (my favorite restaurant). Lots of options around the hotel to hop on BART and explore other areas of the city too!
The Naked Experience is the icing on the cake! Best hotel beds EVER!
We loved this boutique hotel. The staff was very pleasant, always had a smile on their face. The corner room had fantastic views and very comfortable beds. The Top of the Mark was incredible. Took the cable car down to Union Square which was nearby and very festive. We love you Mark Hopkins hotel & San Francisco!
Breakfast was wonderful. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed it everyday. The location is the best! Walking distance to pier 39, to the Baudin bakery, the cable car station, the big bus station and etc. We even walked back from Union Square to China town and then back to the hotel.
Staff was friendly and efficient. Location is ideal, close to Union Square, stores, and theaters. The warm, inviting ambience is felt throughout: in the room, the charming communal sitting area, and the equally quaint space for evening wine and morning continental breakfast in the sister hotel nextdoor.
The room I have is spacious and staff there are friendly. The hotel is new and very near to hop on hop off bus stop. Walking distance to Union Square as well. The most important, provide service to keep the luggage which I saw many of San Francisco Hotel doesn't provide this service.
This is the best stay I have enjoyed in San Francisco! The location was convenient with easy access and short walk to the bus service to get downtown.
The room was clean and pleasant, we could have had a better view, but maybe that is reserved for the suites?
Really friendly staff who were very attentive and couldn't be faulted. The hotel is out there in terms of decoration, in a v cool way. Great location 2 mins from Union Square and the classic San Francisco trams and 5 mins from China Town.
Very nice and accommodating staff and a great location near union square. We could reach a lot of sights and activities in San Francisco in walking distance or easily via public transport directly in front of and near the hotel.
Value for money. The best hotel at the best location! Exactly at union square and everything is in 20-30 minutes walk. Large room, comfortable beds, the staff was cleaning everyday! Totally recommend
Hotel is located in a quiet Street in downtown. 3 blocks to union square. Bus stop is at the door.
The suite is very clean with high standard upgrade. The staff is very helpful.
Very comfortable apartment, well located close to union square but on a quiet street. Clean and tidy, very good service. Best place for a family in San Francisco.
