Casa na Serra da Estrela, hotel in Melo

Offering mountain views, Casa na Serra da Estrela is an accommodation set in Melo, 41 km from Mangualde Live Artificial Beach and 46 km from Parque Natural Serra da Estrela.

This is an odd one to review. I'm sure it's not everyones cup of tea but I liked it greatly. It's in a village way up in the Serra down a narrow road and is on the Pelhourinho (small square) where there is an ancient stone cross(?). The apartment is very large and sports two bedrooms as well as a spacious sitting-cum-dining kitchen. As the house is very old the walls are about 3ft thick and the windows quite small. Hence it is rather dark, which is accentuated by the hosts having dark furniture and curtains that can't be pulled over the windows. I managed to hook these away and opened all the windows, which turned out to be a mistake. I let loads of flies in! As it is an agricultural area (I spotted an old man with a donkey and cart leading his sheep uphill - amazing that they voluntarily followed him - I presumed some sort of supper was on offer for them) I suspect the flies are endemic and can't be stopped. A tip if you stay here: many of the windows have fly screens so only open those that have them. One of the owners is a keen carpenter/sculpterer so there are lots of examples of his work from the bedheads to bedside lamps, ornaments etc. Rather too much, I felt, so the place feels rather cluttered. The kitchen is dated as one would expect, but quite adequate with everything you might need. The beds and bedding are reasonable and the water is piping hot. The internet works very well and is fast. It is quiet at night and any outside noise is muffled by the thick walls. The restaurant below mirrors the apartment - it is dark, as it it is a few steps below road level. It has outside seating made of the same rustic furniture made by the owner - the table is at quite an angle so I was amazed that my drinks didn't slide off! The pizza is very tasty and filling and both food and drinks are very reasonably priced. On my second night they had a food special which was inexpensive and so large that I couldn't finish it.

Madre de Água Hotel Rural de Charme, hotel in Melo

Just a 5-minute drive away from the city of Gouveia, in the slopes of Serra da Estrela Mountain, Madre De Água Hotel Rural de Charme is located in a producing wine, cheese and olive oil farm.

A very special place within an agriturismo setting. The staff were very welcoming and seemed to be passionate about the hotel and what it stood for - local produce, its own wines and nuts, the way it sat within the nature around it.
