Offering a garden and sea view, Refúgio da serra is situated in Arco da Calheta, 24 km from Girao Cape and 33 km from Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools.
Set in the western part of Madeira, this brand new accommodation was built on the grounds of an old sugar cane factory.

Andrea the receptionist was so sweet and helpful. She guided every day and made a list of things to do. We were checking out early in the morning so they packed a cute picnic basket as well. Beautiful place and it was a great stay.
Featuring pool views, bluegreen offers accommodation with balcony, around 1.1 km from Caminho Faja do Mar Beach. With sea views, this accommodation provides a terrace and a swimming pool.

Arco da Calheta is a local parish with character, spread out across a steep, hilly valley with narrow, winding roads, facing the Atlantic. Visitors will likely live among local residents and their wildlife (one or two cows, a few chickens & cockerels announcing their presence; cats & and dogs calmly roaming around), although more holiday accommodation is springing up, and Shopkeepers/restaurants are helpful, and often speak English, though not all! The weather is hard to predict sometimes , and can contrast across different parts of the parish: near the ocean , it is more likely to be calm and sunny; further up the slopes you will get more cloud and possibly wind on exposed sections. A visit to a local supermarket will likely mean either hopping in your car or a very bracing workout for your leg muscles!

Arco da Calheta is a very peaceful part of the island with little traffic and mostly locals. There are some excellent hiking opportunities nearby, most notably 25 Fontes, which is a very popular (and therefore very busy) but beautiful trail. Not recommended without a car as even amenities are long and steep walks away and the hiking trails are only accessible with car too. Taxis don’t work here and buses are very infrequent.

Quieter than the Funchal area and still central enough to explore the island of Madeira. Some small shops, bars and restaurants around.
Close to Calheta where you can find a supermarket and a couple of restaurants. And the most sandy beach of the island!
Living further up the mountains, means driving on more windy. steep and narrow roads. Staying closer to the coast will make driving easier.

This was our second time in Madeira, and first, we stayed in Ribeira Brava. The landscape in Archo da Calheta is very similar, with dramatic cliffs hanging over the ocean. The valley is falling into the ocean, making the place very picturesque. We loved the area and would recommend it to anyone staying there.

Lovely place for family of four.
Lovely place for family of four. Nice, comfortable and quiet location with very local climate. Bar with great coffee below and reserved car park space. Few minutes driving from supermarket and the beach. Weather was usually better then in Funchal. Handy distance to Fanal forest or other attractions on the west side of Madeira. Highly recommended.

The host was amazing.
The host was amazing. I can not say enough good things about her. She was concerned about our happiness throughout the whole stay. Lots of recommendations of where to eat and things and places to see. The house was exactly as described and very clean. I would not hesitate to stay here again if it was available on my next trip to Madeira. Best rental property out of all of my previous stays using Booking.com.

A million dollar view from every hotel room. The rooms are big. Restaurant with delicious meals in the same building. The staff is very nice. The breakfast is quite rich, but they could make decent coffee, only instant coffee was offered. But maybe it would have been given if you had asked. We didn't ask. In February, the pool was freezing cold.
Calheta beach (sandy beach), suitable for swimming, is only 2.5 km away, and there are also several good and affordable restaurants there.
From the moment we arrived until the day of departure, the hosts went above and beyond to ensure a memorable and comfortable stay. For Christmas they brought us cake and wine, and also a bunch of delicious fruit from Madeira. In addition to the hospitality, the property itself was a gem. But I want to mention that the terrace on the pictures was not from our apartment, it was shared with other units. So the photos may be misleading.
Overall, our experience here was fantastic.
We had an incredible week stay here in June. The house is beautiful, comfortable and clean. The location is the sunniest area on the island and we enjoyed spending time relaxing in the stunning, peaceful outdoor area. Comfortable beds, powerful shower and great host. Some fab restaurants and bars nearby, in particular Calheta Green and Pukiki cocktail bar.
Some mention the road, in the scheme of roads in Madeira, it's pretty standard. Just get a small, powerful car.
A beautifully located house, in a complex of 3 houses, but with maximum privacy for guests. Wonderful view, well-equipped and detached house. Very helpful host, well-prepared guide to Madeira for guests, equipped kitchen, plenty of towels. The garden with vegetables and herbs available to guests was a wonderful surprise.
The property must be managed by the Savoy Hotel chain. I was contacted by email one day before we were scheduled to stay at the Hill Houses. The email stated that they were sorry, but the rental house was no longer available, and they could give me a suite at their 5 star Saccharin Hotel in Calheta.
Everything !!!!! The house itself is a pure jewel. Easy to navigate inside. Smartly made. And with very good material. Everything is well thought.
And it is the first time I got a welcome pack with somme goodies (madeira wine, tangerine liquor etc...) such a nice and sweet lady. Very very flexible.
The pool was so cute and the location was a good mix of quaint yet accessible. The kitchen worked well and the parking was easy. Also even with every accommodation booked we rarely saw other travellers and it felt very private. If we return to Madeira I’d love to stay here again :)
Great place with a amazing view on the ocean. Nice swimming pool. Hotel is small, all rooms had a view of the sea and swimingpool and balcony. Breakfast was very good and also hotel restaurant offers very good dinner . Parking is available . Staff was very nice and friendly .
very friendly and helpful staff, especially Monica. comfortable rooms, ocean view from the room, there is a parking nearby. Hotel restaurant with good and tasty food. The breakfasts are excellent.
Everything was just great! It was one of the best hotels I've stayed in. Also the stuff was very nice, Monica helped us everytime we needed something. Definitely an accomodation to be recommended.

- The pool heating is worth its money (30€/day). You can make a giant jacuzzi if you want to.
