Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

People/salespersons are usually pleasant and helpful.

Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush.
Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and listening to the birdsong. Supermarkets and eats were close enough.
We didn't have enough time to visit places though we know there are great places to visit.

We only stayed for one night so we managed to get down to the marina and see the cool ball-clock and the Hundertwasser (which is amazing) and have an awesome lunch (so many places to pick from!). Next time we go to Whangarei we will be sure to do the loop walk which sounds very interesting indeed!
The concept of the Grand is awesome with so much potential original nostalgia. But you check in at the pub!!! Room had broken door handles and grout hanging off the walls, bad repair on the cracked sink(definitely worth saving and not replacing with crappy modern sink). The repairs are horrid, and take away from such a beautiful hotel under the dirt, and bad workmanship. Not thought through at all. The nostalgia of staying in the old Grand was great, and staff tried hard to make it good. Pity such a potential is wasted
The room had a lot of space and the bed was very comfy with excellent sheets (I'm very fussy about good quality sheets and these had a sateen finish).
It was a clean room with a good array of toiletries and most of all the motel had information about its "green" policies so a big tick from me! What was very important is that it had lights above the bed enabling you to actually read in bed unlike many motels where there's one low light in the middle of the room which gives out poor light.
It's an antique hotel with a lot of history, although the prestige it used to have in the past has faded away. Nevertheless, it's quite good for the value if staying a couple of nights in Whangarei. It's clean, comfortable, it's got a TV, a kettle and a mini fridge. It's located 5 mins walking from city center. Again, you get what you pay for.
Excellent customer service from before arrival, calling to check on booking/arrival, to accommodating extra requests like breakfast outside of the service times and extra cot for young child. Attentive, friendly, courteous and amenable. Rooms serviced well. After-care upon checking out was also excellent.
Nancy’s home is lovely! She has though of everything to make travelers feel welcome and comfortable. My spacious room had a view of the garden, a terrace, an ensuite bath with even a towel warmer. And her kitchen was fully supplied! My best stay so far in New Zealand…you won’t be sorry!
Brilliant for a whangarei stay we used the house as a family that met half way to meet each other so 4 adults 3 kids and a baby. Just the right bedding and hang out space and the spa was lovely to use down at the motel end. You have to book your 30min slot in but it works.
Friendly staff, always welcoming, my favourite place to stay in Whangarei. Great value for money. I recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for decent accommodation in Northland, dogs are also welcome, the only hotel that offers this service in Whangarei.
Love the room and bed. Breakfast was standard hotel fare but fresh and acceptable. Dinners from menu were fine and service was ok. Most staff are young and in need of a bit of experience. However, they were always trying to do their best and were very polite.
It was lovely for such a cheap price, spa bath was awesome, we recieved a message saying our room was ready with instructions and we drove straight in, very straight forward! Cosy and had Sky TV, would happily stay again.👌
The motel proprietors were very helpful and gave a lift to and from the airport. That was much appreciated.
The motel was a short walk from the Hundertwasser Gallery which was the main point of our visit to Whangarei.
I've been to motel six a few time now, I love that motel key is always ready nd the place is nice ND quite.. As I do book in after work as 2 tired 2 drive home, Motel six is my go 2 when in Whangarei...The stay is good
Alice is a wonderful and very kind host. She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The space is very clean and has a beautiful view of the water. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting Whangarei.
excellent location and value for money. Customer service is very good and really nice to have separate lounge area from the bedrooms you don’t really get that option in a lot of other motels/hotels.
