Hubby & I made a last-minute decision to stay at Mels Retreat, we loved our time together in such a magical spot, we didn't realize how busy we had been until we stopped for "Air" at Mels. Everything was thought of, personal touches & gifts, "no-one really does well" anymore... but she did. The location is epic, and the amenities were amazing. The Spa and Sauna are game changers. We had a lovely stay in the Rock retreat. It was very clean and beautifully presented. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook a decent meal.
We had plenty of firewood to keep warm on a very cold weekend. The bed was super comfy. Overall a great weekend to shut off from technology and enjoy the mountains

Carmel Farm is a beautiful property and Barbara and Leo couldn't have been more welcoming and accomodating. They took my 13 year old nephew out at the crack of dawn to feed the calves and take part in the morning chores on the farm - he had an incredible time and hasn't stopped talking about it since! We were made to feel so welcome and enjoyed great chats over a glass of wine in the evening and over the beautiful breakfast Barabara prepared for us in the morning. Would recommend a visit to anyone!

A small town in a lovely rural area. A decent restaurant for dinner and a great café for breakfast or lunch. We have often broken journeys from Tāmaki Makaurau to Taranaki or other places further south, here. Great to charge your car while staying at the Fat Owl or by using the OpenLoop fast charger.

This is a small town with a big heart.
This is a small town with a big heart. Our first stop was the Fat Pigeon Cafe for lunch - delicious food with a view of the park. We then walked up and down the two sides of the street, stopping to look at the restored old school bus and poster board, the art gallery, craft shop and op shops before having a hot chocolate from the coffee cart at the other end of the street. For dinner we ate at The Night Owl restaurant- loved the decor, the food portions were HUGE and super tasty,

Bàrbara is a lovely, friendly and very accommodating host...
Bàrbara is a lovely, friendly and very accommodating host who made us feel like part of her family.
The location is perfect for tourists and for travellers wishing to purchase seasonal berries and asparagus. So close to famous Waitomo Caves, it is the perfect stopover spot.
We will definitely call in again when next we travel through Piopio. Thanks Bàrbara and Leo. You are amazing!!!
