I liked the uniqueness about the place. Private areas good. Nice little area away from the bigger towns but handy to them.

The staff were so awesome, the receptionist went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and even helped me find if Arthurs Pass was open!

The word "Retreat" in the title gave me the expectation of luxurious accomodation with fully contained rooms, spas etc. None of that, which was disappointing. A small private holiday park would cover it better.

We had a larger group of 4 families of different sizes, the villa and cabin options fitted with our agenda and stay perfectly. We did a lot of driving and exploring during the day and cooked at home / played games in the evening. It was a lot of fun.

it was a good location for sightseeing further around the area and for exploring on foot or bike. Be aware of the insects though and make sure you have repellent with you. The 'town' itself is very quiet. I would strongly recommend staying at the Hotel Theatre Royal. Clean, comfortable, interesting, great staff and good food.

We came to Kumara specifically to stay at the Greenstone Retreat.....travelling the South Island, on the list was Fish n Chips on the Beach by the famous 'Hokitika' Sign to watch the sunset!!!
We did this, and Kumara was just a skip away to stay.

Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara...
Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara Historic Cottage is a backpackers with basic yet comfortable accommodation that fits the cost which was very reasonable.
Comfortable beds and the living room was OK for four of us - would be cramped with a full quota of guests. Kitchen basic. No separate toilet.
If you want less basic accommodation, the pub has rooms available.
Main grizzle was the lack of TV channels available - one channel (Prime) is no choice and when it is pouring outside there is very little to do in Kumara! On the bright side, the pub opens at 4:00pm in the afternoon and the coffee, beer, and meals are good.
One real bonus is the safe storage of your bike in a locked shed in which you can recharge your battery if you have an ebike. If a number of ebikes need to recharge, some may have to wait their turn so it pays to connect up - if you can - when you arrive.

The township is steeped in history easily available to visitors.Walking is an easy way to get around. Theatre Royal is a fabulous place to eat snacks, or indulge in a lovely meal. Staff brilliant. Kids menu fabulous for even the fussiest youngster.
Beautifully clean....gorgeous place....wonderful atmosphere!! Kate was great with communication about checkin, and had some cool ideas for how to spend our days while in the area. Kids loved the games room!! The 'outdoor' kitchen was cool.....well-equipped, and beautifully clean!! Would highly recommend the Greenstone Retreat, to people who appreciate accomodation that is unique.....a very special place!!!
We stayed in the Miners Cottages. They are amazing! So spacious and warm. The beds are comfy and warm, the bathroom is beautiful. The staff are all so nice and very accommodating. A lovely lady told us about some cool glow worms for the kids to look at just a short walk away so we took them to see those. Overall, very impressed.
Surprisingly quiet since it's the main road through to the west coast. Its very clean, everything worked. Can't say anything about tv because never used it. Its a very cute little place and suited our needs very well. Definitely recommend.
A very warm welcome by our hosts. Big room with fridge, tv, queen bed and 4 bunks, ideal for a family or cycling group. Nice bathroom with great shower. 250m from The Theatre Hotel for dinner and breakfast. Highly recommend.
Congratulations to the proprietor and the staff for maintaining the building, the interior and the facilities as close as possible to the original style of this hotel. Great to see and to experience.!!!!
What a great base to explore Kumara. We loved the retreat and surrounding area. The hammocks were super relaxing to help unwind. Kate the owner is super friendly and very passionate about the area.
The staff were friendly, cheerful and helpful The Hotel had been successfully restored in a way that acknowledged its past while providing modern facilities.
Lovely old cottage, had a room restored Lovingly with a modern bathroom. Could share a kitchen if you wanted to use it or dine across the road at the hotel
beautiful little cottages.
would be good to inform future guests about checking in in the Royal theatre hotel because the signage might be not quite clear
