What a fabulous area to explore - there is so much to see and do. Karamea is an absolute must do!
The beach and estuary is gorgeous and then there is the absolutely astonishing oporara basin with all the wonderful sights there. Oporara arch, mirror yarn, Moria gate arch,Fenian’s walk and the tunnel cave (take a REALLY good torch) and then there is Kohaihai and the start of the Heaphy track. A very special area!

We are Jehovah’s Witnesses and spent two days talking to people in and around Karamea. We found them friendly, very open and accommodating. One man was not interested but said if we needed the toilet or a drink just to pop back. Another lady we saw the next day at the local market, and as there was no parsley on sale she suggested we call in on our way home and she would give us some out of her garden. Lovely people.

Laid back quiet town.
Laid back quiet town. Close to day walks and the trail heads of Heaphy and Wangapeka tracks. The town has all the basic amenities inc supermarket, Cafe, and a great 'County pub' that serves awesome meals Inc vegetarian and Plant based options.

I enjoyed the winding road through native bush from Westport. Others may not! The beach is beautiful white sand, surprising for the west coast of NZ. The walks are easy and tracks well maintained with something for everyone. Long or short. The village was busy with the market on Saturday morning. The arches are amazing. Not sure I would want to meet a large campervan coming the other way though. Some parts of the road out to the caves were narrow and bumpy.

What an amazing part of New Zealand.
What an amazing part of New Zealand. The only drawback is the road getting there which had a lot of one way parts and was not very well maintained. Karamea is full of history and we enjoyed our visit to the local museum which gives a great overview of the early settlers of this part. Lots of walking tracks and of course is the end of Heaphy Track.
