I recently stayed at Grand Rockland in Matara, Sri Lanka, and it was great. The location is excellent, and the hotel is very well maintained. It’s perfect if you enjoy social and party vibes.
Our room was wonderful, especially the private outdoor garden. The staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome. I also liked the antiques displayed around the hotel.
The restaurant offered a range of tasty options, including Sri Lankan, Chinese, and Indian dishes, as well as delicious pastries. The night atmosphere was calm and relaxing.
One of the best parts was the boat ride arranged by the hotel. We saw crocodiles, birds, and beautiful islands in the river. Overall, I had a great stay at Grand Rockland and would definitely recommend it.

We had a wonderful stay with Summi and Mal. The house is very large and very beautiful. The room is very pleasant and above all there is a magnificent terrace where we had breakfasts and dinners. The food prepared by Mal is very good and very plentiful. We were welcomed by a very warm family and it was very pleasant to chat in the evening with Sara, Chathmi and Mal. In short, you understand, we highly recommend this address. I forgot to say that the family rented us a scooter during our stay for an extremely reasonable price. We were able to explore the entire region. Early in the morning we went swimming with the turtles. It's a wonderful memory. In short, you can go there without hesitation.

Polhena beach is an excellent place to have a safe swim for a traveller and can see turtles in the sea if you are lucky enough. And can visit Matara light house and Kudawalla water air hole by travelling a bit from Matara which has another nice beach.

Polhena is a nice village, Matara is a nice city with friendly people. There is lots to do in this area.
For example guided snorkling at Polhena Beach where you can really swim with the turtles, a boattrip on the Nilwala Ganga where you can see crocodiles.
Or visit the Starfort.
A great restaurant in Matara city is Dutchmanstreet restaurant. In Polhena i recommend eating at Sunil Rest, Blue Corals or Reef Edge restaurant.
Walking around at night in Polhena... take a stick and flash light with you, the street dogs just had puppys (cute) but their mother instinct gave me the creeps.

Matara is great transport hub, has fast bus connection with Colombo (via expressway). Also most buses on south pass through Matara. Though it's not a good place to stay longer - crowds, no good beaches, high prices.

Can not rate this place high enough! Jimna the host is probably the nicest person we’ve ever met, he went above and beyond to help us in any way he could plus the accomodation Is beautiful. Absolute water front and a easy stroll to the surf every morning, amazing room and great price. If your looking for a homely feel away from the hustle of the big hotels and resorts this is the place!! Will be recommending this place to everyone that travels to the south of Sri Lanka! A great little hotel with friendly staff in an excellent location just a short walk from Madiha Beach. Pool is a nice feature and rooms are good size with nice ambient lighting. Would definitely stay again.
