Went to Shimoda mid Sept which was lean season for summer adventure so less people around. It offers good beaches and many water activities. Stayed for a week which gives us relaxing time to enjoy the beach and places to see.

Great town right on the coast, has a number of great beaches nearby and beautiful rocky coastlines and cliffs to see. It is more of a tourist town though, so expect prices of things to be high. Be ready to hear constantly about Commodore Perry and the Black Ships! Some things require you to sign up or buy tickets well in advance; it's worth looking up anything you're interested in trying beforehand to see if it does.
Best coffee we had was at the Hana Cafe, best food was the South Cafe.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama. It's right across the street from a lovely beach and the breakfast was quite nice. We loved the 2 outdoor onsens that are built on the 1F. Great to watch the stars from there amidst the treetops!
The location is ideally positioned a short walk from both the fine powder sand of the popular Shirahama and the quieter Shirahama Chuo beaches.
the room was clean and equipped with a fridge with freezer, and a good A/C.
There are plenty of showers as well as a full unit bath. The natural outdoor shower was awesome!
Also there is a great yard with chairs, umbrellas and hammocks for hanging out after a day on the beach, as well as a chill indoor lounge.
We were amazed at the hospitality at Guesthouse All You Need. Our room was very comfortable ( comfy beds and pillows and a great AC/Heater), the kitchen was well stocked and clean, and free coffee and tea all day. We loved the free bikes, gorgeous views and so many beautiful beaches.
Our host was beyond helpful with any questions and he was just a pleasure to talk to. We felt like we made friends at this guesthouse and will definitely be back.
The staff were lovely and friendly. They made very good efforts to communicate with us in english since our Japanese is terrible and everything was very easy. The egg salad sandwiches they gave us as part of the complimentary breakfast was to die for. The outdoor onsens were nothing short of magical. The room was simple but comfortable, and less than 5 minutes walking from the beach.
Awesome location. Walking distance to Shirahama beach. Clean and quiet surroundings. Clean room and toilet. Decent parking space. The manager Kazu/Smily is very polite and friendly and most importantly can speak English. He is an awesome didge player as well. The whole atmosphere at the place is amazing. The lounge area is a chill place.
Loved the private onsen, we only got to try the stone one (they have two, wood and stone). Loved how close the place was from the beach and shrine, and the bus stop too! The hosts were very nice, and the breakfast are great!
They also have a microwave, hot water, and instant coffees and teas.
Gardenvilla Shirahama is a little paradise. The staff was so welcoming and helpful before and during our stay, the rooms were clean and very comfortable and all the amenities were such a pleasure to enjoy. The breakfast was also one of the best we had in Japan! Thank you for everything :)
I loved everything about this! The guesthouse perfectly fits its name and concept: ALL YOU NEED. It really has all you need. I will be coming back for sure, not once. Its probably THE best guesthouse in all of Japan and i strongly recommend it to anyone travelling to Shimoda.
It has a great sandy beach below and it is ideal for all especially surfers. The room was very large offering fantastic views out to sea and down to the beach. There is a hotel shuttle bus taking us to Shimoda but we also caught a local bus not far from the hotel.
The location is very close to Shirahama beach and 2 convenient stores; the host is very friendly and helpful; the room has both mountain and sea view; we can also book the big bath for private use
The host was informative, sincere(We arrived after !0:00pm.), hospitable, kind, and a great photographer. Shirahama Beach was nearby. Plenty of nature surrounding Sakura Pension.
Our stay in the hotel was comfortable. It was very near to the Shirahama Ohama beach. As we traveled during winter we enjoyed hiking; there are very nice hiking trail nearby.
Beautiful location direct access to the beach
Walking distance to the temple and the seaside shrine.
Facility is well-equipped, the room is spacious, clean and comfortable
Nice hotel by the port and 10mins walk from train station. Nice onsen in the hotel. Large variety of food for breakfast and dinner. Free bike hire to explore the town.
