Episode1, hotel in Naoshima

Located just less than 1 km from Hachiman Shrine, Episode1 features accommodation in Naoshima with access to free bikes, a garden, as well as luggage storage space.

This was a lovely apartment with all the amenities and a strong life saving AC that helped us survive the Naoshima heat. The location is great, conveniently located just outside the city bus stop and opposite one of the best (if not THE best) Okonomiyaki places we’ve ever been in Japan.

Quaint House Naoshima, hotel in Naoshima

Situated in Naoshima, 100 metres from Sumiyoshi-taisha Temple and 400 metres from Naoshima Pavillion, Quaint House Naoshima offers free WiFi and air conditioning.

We were expecting a little more when we arrived (it’s literally a shipping container) but as we turned the air-con on and cooled down the room, we adjusted and it was a little more comfortable. The location is perfect, and the staff were so friendly. The towels were replaced every day and they turned down our beds, which was very much appreciated. Overall it was a really enjoyable stay, however for the price point, I’d recommend for people to spend a little more money and stay at the Benesse Hotel.

We loved the Ryokan vibe really well preserved with top notch modern art twist! Marc has exquisite taste and we felt it right the way. Every single details has a special meaning here. Muji bedding was a huge highlight to us and the house is very cosy. Marc and lovely Japanese staff were on top of everything to ease our stay!

Sparky’s House, hotel in Naoshima

Featuring quiet street views, Sparky’s House offers accommodation with a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge, around 200 metres from Naoshima Christ Church.

Excellent service, very attentive and friendly staff, and incredible value for money. Sparky's is very close to one of two main ports, which made it convenient, and the rooms were very large and comfy. Breakfast was also delicious.

Vacation House YOKOMBO ANNEX, hotel in Naoshima

Located just 600 metres from Naoshima Pavillion, Vacation House YOKOMBO ANNEX provides accommodation in Naoshima with access to a private beach area, a garden, as well as free shuttle service.

Very spacious and well equipped place, almost directly at the beach (perfect for cooling off after a long day of art) and not far from the port. The owner is extremely kind, picked us up from the ferry and gave us everything we need and more (we even got some floaties for the beach!). Sad we only stayed for one night.

La Curación, hotel in Naoshima

La Curación offers accommodation in Naoshima. Takamatsu is 13 km away. The property is approximately a 10-minute walk from Gotanji Beach. Free WiFi is provided in all guest rooms.

Surprisingly good room, like a small one-bedroom flat on the ground floor. Easy access to the road, free parking right outside. Very quiet at night. Close to a few restaurants in the next village, and also close to famous art galleries. Facilities were great, including a washing machine. The owner, Tetsuo, was very helpful and friendly.

    AMAZING + STUNNING !!

AMAZING + STUNNING !! Be sure to double check all activities and timetable of expositions in advance: it can change seasonally and over the time, depending on performances on show !! Be sure to book in advance the special night visits are usually scheduled few times (possibly only one) per week !! Don't plan to stay one night only, it's minimum two and 3 is better, time is priceless when at Naoshima !! Don't forget to rent an eclectic-bike, busses are available and very useful during the day but cannot reach every single locations. Just book and enjoy it !!

It was peaceful and not crowded, even during cherry blossom season. The galleries were wonderful and you could spend 4 of 5 days relaxing, sight seeing, visiting port towns, galleries and the other islands. After a hectic tour of Japan, these last few days of our trip here was a welcome wind down. Very easy to get around the island using the town bus snd the free art shuttle bus. We had cheap but cute accommodation st the seaside park close to more expensive Benesse House accommodation and were able to have a buffet breakfast at Benesse which gave us a touch of luxury. As food options are limited make sure you book if you want a sit down meal though as we were caught out and had to walk 15 mins to another little town for dinner one night. Luckily it was a great meal and gorgeous walk.

The location and quiet were most welcome. Our host Marc was extremely patient and helpful, with the best advice given to rent a car as my handicapped husband would have struggled up and down the slopes of Naoshima. It was such a joy to drive around the island at our own time and target, and then to come back to a wonderfully warm and beautiful home. Indeed, just like home! Would be great for a multi-tier family - there’s so much room!

The city is for those who really want to see art and architecture. The experience is wonderful. Things only open between 10am and 4pm. Outside of these hours, it is an empty city, everything closed and no people.

Fabulous art installations and galleries to visit in the area. Well worth a visit. At least two. preferably three full days required if you wish to visit Teshima as well - worth it for the Teshima Art Museum.

Naoshima is small and not overly populated but it does see its fair share of tourists there to see a few galleries: Benesse House Museum, Chichu, and a few others - mostly starchitecture. Please make sure to reserve tickets before hand if this is your intention for coming here. We didn't and we were unable to go into the museum we had come to see. It was our mistake, but there was not any flexibility in regards to this. It is fair enough to preserve the experience, just be aware this is the situation. Some of these museums are also very much about the architects rather than a piece of interesting architecture housing an expansive or unique collection.
