Himeji has always been a favourite place to visit.
Himeji has always been a favourite place to visit. This is my 3rd or 4th visit. In cherry blossom season, it is nothing short of spectacular. In winter, it's not so green, but the gardens are still worth seeing and wandering through. The castle itself is worth every cent of the entry fee and one could easily spend 2 or more hours exploring all the nooks and crannies before even reaching the 6 floor castle. Climbing to the top is must, but remember you will need to take off your shoes (and the stairs are more like wide rung ladders, so hold onto the rails!
The eateries are also worthwhile visiting, with plenty of choice in the area between the station and the castle. We visited a Vietnamese restaurant at lunchtime - it was huge and totally empty apart from us, and the food was fabulous - we chose banh mi which was just as good as in its' home country.

Loved arriving on the train and as we exited the station in the evening all the Christmas lights on the wide Avenue running straight from station to the lit up Himeji Castle in the distance..just stunning. The castle is amazing and a beautiful garden alongside it. Lovely to stroll around.

Himeji castle is a must see.
Himeji castle is a must see. Extremely interesting and along with the associated park is a good 3 hour adventure. Free English speaking guides at the entrance will accompany you. Well sign posted with many displays along the route through the castle in English.

I have been here so many times.
I have been here so many times. The castle, Himeji Central Park, the aquarium.... there are so many wonderful places to visit, and at the same time, it is full of terrific shops and restaurants. I don't think there is anybody who would NOT have a good time in this pleasant little city.

The castle exceeded our expectations.
The castle exceeded our expectations. You can access the entire castle and grounds and it is more beautiful than any photo I'd seen of it. Also, the multitude of alleyways and shops is lovely, safe and fun

It is a lovely, but bustling little city.
It is a lovely, but bustling little city. The castle is within sight of just about every hotel. It is worth a day's visit. However, I would avoid it in August; it must be so hot inside, as most places probably were during the 1400s. HImeji Central Park is definitely worth a visit. There is convenient bus service, and the park is often open late on weekends. There is an aquarium, too. The city itself is loaded with old-fashioned shopping streets, closed to cars, and covered, a bonus in case you have forgotten an umbrella. It is indeed a shopping mecca. You will find everything imaginable, and near the castle, loads of old shops PLUS an open-air market that is loads of fun to browse. I am not sure whether it is open daily, so check the days/hours. Finally, there is an open, public space/park right in front of the station that makes hanging around the station area good fun. Several ice cream shops, crepe shops, loads of bread shops. The bread shop in the Hotel Nikko is particularly good, and it is a 15-second walk from the station.
The staff were great - reception, kitchen and housekeeping. Washing machines were excellent. The location next to the station and on the main street suited us perfectly. Breakfast over the 5 days of our stay was variable but never bad and occasionally good. The exceptions were the awful coffee and the lack of fresh fruit juices. The Oriental members of our party were more satisfied than the Western which is only to be expected in a Japanese hotel but they still viewed the breakfast as slightly inferior to those we enjoyed elsewhere in Japan.
Conveniently placed for walking from the station. Able to take a bus to Himeji Castle from the Bus terminal outside the train station. The room was a bit tight on space. Beds a little hard. Very close to Sanyo line, so could hear the trains from our bedroom. Breakfast room consisted of long tables seating many people. Good range of mostly Japanese style breakfast. Lovely member of the staff came to our room to show us how to use the air conditioning, as no English instructions.
The bed was extreamly comfortable, the room was very clean, the public bath inside the hotel is a must if you're staying and even tho it was right next to the train station you couldn't hear anything, the staff was very nice and helpful.
The lawson's inside the hotel was very handy and the caffe Veloce that has an entrance inside the hotel is a great place for breackfast if you like to wake up a little later. It's located at a walking distance from Himeji Castle
Tomo-san runs an amazing guest house. My stay in 2017 was memorable enough to make it a priority stop when I finally returned to Japan after COVID. He even took the time to translate some nearby restaurants menus to assist travelers when going out for food nearby. He and his families hospitality is above and beyond anything else you will experience on the road. Do not pass up a stay here if you find yourself in Himeji.
The guesthouse is a small and cozy place, very well situated.
It's about 5 minutes walk both from the Himeji Castle and from the station, with many stores, bars and conveniences all nearby.
The owner was super kind, even though my Japanese is not that good. She suggested me good places to eat and for sightseeing.
Could not recommend a better place to stay in Himeji, specially considering the price and the location!
- Layout of the hostel is impressive and well thought out. They really put their customers comfort first.
- Free slippers, shower needs, coffee for breakfast, they have coin laundry inside in case you need to wash your clothes.
- Location is good, near Himeji station and around 15mins walk from Himeji castle.
- Staffs were nice and very accommodating.
- Cozy space
The features of a business hotel were available including a microwave near reception. We could easily walk to a supermarket to pick up food to eat in. Also, we were able to walk comfortably to the Castle and train station. There was a slightly higher than usual step up into the bathroom which is OK for us but could be a challenge for someone with impaired mobility.
I really loved staying at this hotel. The onsen was such a nice way to relax after a long day of exploring Himeji. The room is consistent in size with most hotels in Japan and had a good layout. I especially loved the free ramen and ice cream in the evenings. Incredible value. Great location (very close walk to Himeji shinkansen station)
The host went out of her way to let me drop off my bag before check-in time. Even gave me a little snack after checking in. Probably the best welcome I had so far travelling around Japan. The distance from the station and Himeji Castle was perfect too.
This was a unique little slice of Japanese culture with a very good location within easy walking distance of the train station and castle as right within town centre. Lovely host who was helpful and friendly.
Location was easy and convenient to Himeji castle. I was concerned about parking at first but fortunately we can pay for parking at this hotel. Friendly staff and the room was alright for two people to share.
Great location, super close to the station and not far away from the castle. Also a lot of restaurants in the area.
Also there's a coin laundry at the hotel, which is great
Great location in Himeji with plenty of shopping and food near by. The beds were super comfortable, the bathroom was amazing, and we had a great view of Himeji Castle.
Wonderful place to stay in Himeji! Very close to the train station an walking distance to the Himeji castle too. Our room was very spacious and clean with comfy beds.
Lovely Japanese style hotel with its special charms.
Breakfast is fantastic. I didn't know what to choose.
