While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
We stayed in a beautiful traditional Japanese room, with an attached private bathroom which was perfect for our needs. We opted to have both dinner and breakfast at the ryokan, and both meals were great. The location is a short bus ride from the train station, with easy access to both the main street of Nagano and Zenkoji Temple. We went for a short walk up to the temple after dinner, and it was lovely to see it lit up in the dark with no tourists around. Highly recommend booking this ryokan if you're visiting Nagano!
Conveniently located across from the Zenjoki entrance/exit of Nagano Station, the hotel has a Family Mart attached to the building as well as a restaurant. Around the corner, you'll find several other restaurants and izakaya to fulfill whatever cravings you may have. The bed was comfortable although the pillows were a bit thin. The staff were all super friendly and accommodating.
The lobby included a shampoo bar offering various types of shampoo for you to use instead of the standard shampoo that was in the room.
The hotel is very close to the Nagano station.
The receptionist was very gentle and helped us a lot during our stay (even though his English was not perfect, he was very helpful and we really appreciated his kindness, a big thanks to him).
The room was clean and a lot of amenities (comparing to other hotels) are available in the lobby.
The breakfast was a buffet with a mix of Japanese and continental dishes, I really appreciated the local juices.
We had a fantastic time at 1166 Backpacker.
- Location: It is perfectly located to explore the city (the famous Zenkoji Temple is a 5-minute walk away) and is also a 20-minute walk from the train station.
- This is a traditional Japanese house with futon beds, super comfy, we had our best sleep in Japan there.
- The team was super kind and friendly, and we enjoyed chatting with them.
Merci Etsuko, c'était un plaisir de parler avec toi :)
The hotel is perfect located for the railway station and the city of Nagano,
It has a feeling of grandeur but also comfortable with the staff being extremely friendly and more than happy to help, like an earlier check in if available,
I went to the bar on the top floor a few times and found the bar manager extremely friendly, when I returned a week later I stayed an extra night before returning to Tokyo
If you are looking for a nice 1-2 night stay in the heart of Nagano's traditional temple district, this is it. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is extremely accommodating. The breakfast and dinners are in an authentic ryokan style, with many different traditional Japanese dishes. I loved the location because it was easy to just step out and do a bit of shopping or go to a nearby restaurant/cafe.
The room was larger than I expected. The breakfast was excellent- I normally have breakfast as a criteria when choosing hotels in Japan (though this was purely for location), and this one holds up very well.
If it’s not snowing, you’re better off accessing the hotel by crossing the street from the station- the underground corridor is very cold and the elevator into the hotel is tiny.
Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.
Everything about my stay was great - from the beautiful traditional Japanese house, delicious feast carefully prepared by the owners, warm and cozy room with a spectacular view of Nagano mountains, to the surrounding nature, snow, and calming atmosphere.
Oshi-san (the owner) is the kindest and most welcoming person you can imagine - can't recommend this stay enough!
Comfy and clean bed ’pod’ and shared bathroom facilities. Nice bar downstairs, the beers are really good though a bit pricey. The staff are super-nice and put up with my terrible Japanese 🤣 the location is perfect for Nagano station (10 mins walk max) and then it's a straight walk to the temples through the main shopping streets. I'd definitely stay again.
This hotel is perfectly situated close to the station and near eateries. We got in late with heavy bags so it was a relief to only have to walk a couple of minutes from the station to the hotel.
Breakfast is generous with breads and fruit and yogurt as well as a full Japanese selection of rice and noodles, fish, sausage and bacon.
The hotel is very well located in the centre of Nagano city, 3 minutes from the main station and close access to most of the location to visit. The staff is nice and polite, and the hotel itself is quite clean. Even if the room is a little small, it's practical, clean for an affordable price. The bed were quite comfortable.
A one-of-a-kind Ryokan with kind owners and in a great location. Lots of wonderful restaurants nearby. Bus stop for Nagano Station is near the entrance. Hangout in the lobby or sit on the sidewalk bench in front of the building to experience the culture of the Zenkoji pilgrams and Nagano's city life.
Hotel is just a little walk away from train station. You can walk to temple and restaurant from there. Hotel provides a lot of amenities like tooth brush, shavor, face masks, shampoo, selection of different pillows etc.
Rooms are not too spacious but big enough to open a big suitcase.
Excellence location. Just 2 minutes from Nagano Station. From the East Exit, cross the bridge, go down the stairs, see a 7-11 and the hotel is next to it. Super convenient. Room is old style but very spacious which is a plus point in Japan hotels.
Very convenient with many places to eat nearby. The hotel is clean with easy access to transportation, whether its the train, bus or taxi. Hotel has direct access to train station.
Very close to the station
A lot of space compared to other places in Japan
Second time staying with Compass, if I come to Nagano again I will be picking this place again.
Hotel was more spacious compared to other hotels we have been to in Japan. Room was clean and neat. Closer to Nagano station with lots of shopping and restaurants nearby.
