Attentive and friendly staff, outstanding dining experience for both dinner and breakfast. The meditation session as well as the morning ceremonies were amazing. The night cemetery tour was so informative and such a unique experience. Staying at Ekoinn was definitely a highlight for us and we cannot recommend this experience high enough!

The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. We loved everything we ate here and we are carnivores!

The morning prayer and the fire ceremony were one of a kind! The temple was situated in a very convenient location, near the cemetery. The food was also really tasty.

Beautifully decorated house, loved the linen sheets and areas to relax in. I liked the homemade breakfast too. The host was very welcoming and helpful.

Everything was wonderful (of course the futon on the floor with a wheat sack pillow was extremely uncomfortable, but to be expected).
Meals were beyond amazing.
The Japanese bath was an experience in nude bathing with strangers (and friends).
The sheets were lovely cotton.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay. There's an amazing cemetery and temple, definitely the best place. Doing shukubo's a great experience I recommend doing. Keep in mind that it can get suuuuper cold at night, so you should bring suitable clothes. It was hard to find restaurants to have dinner in. We had a late dinner and it was quite hard to manage. You should go thinking you have to eat your dinner at six o'clock. The temples close their doors quite early and you can't enter once they close, so you should have that in mind as well. The buses are good too, but very strict with punctuality (a bus litterally left in our faces and it was the last one and we had to walk). A short stay is good since you can see pretty much all in a day. We arrived at 1pm and left the other day at 10am and it was great. Everything in Koyasan is super quiet and chill.

The train and cable car were thrilling.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.
The service is excellent. We arrived later than expect and it was really dark when we arrived. I thought we have to walk there because we missed the last bus to the destination, but the staff managed to pick us up at the bus stop which we really appreciated. The room was really comfy and the breakfast was delicious. Thank you so much for an excellent experience. This place will be my top option for the next Koyasan trip and properly my recommendation for my friends if they have a plan to Koyasan.
We were looking for a temple "experience" while staying at Koyasan and we definitely got it. Rooms were traditional but comfortable, bathroom was shared but was no problem as that is what we were looking for and everything was clean. Sadly we were not able to book a breakfast as we probably did a very late booking and check-in. We did participate in the morning prayer which was a nice experience and we did'nt feel not wanted there. They also have a small hot bath in style of an onsen.
If you want to experience a temple and zen night in Koyasan this is highly recommended! The meditation service was a good entry level experience for tourists, and the vegan breakfast/dinner were delicious as well. The only downside is the sleeping situation, you will need to bring eye masks and ear plugs because the rooms are only separated by thin layer. And the futon and pillows was also a bit too hard for me to fall asleep (but probably this is part of the monk life !)
It's a beautiful temple in the stunning mountains of Koyasan. The temple has a well manicured garden and a vast space to explore. It is reasonably close to the entrance to the graveyard walk. The food was a lovely vegetarian and tofu meal and they did give an option for sake or beer. The staff was welcoming and spoke very good english. They gave a great overview of the morning ceremony and included a participatory element.
Just what we hoped for! A nice large room in a historical Buddhist Temple in a precious mountain Buddhist town! The morning prayer service was really nice. The 1000 yen meditation was neat. The tea delivered to the room, the vegetarian breakfast (delivered to the room) and the breakfast in the common room were all special. the service was all around perfect. This is a great experience!
The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. This guest house is a very charming place to stay near Garan, Koyasan central temple complex. The whole property is spotless and we'll equipped. The hosts are extremely kind and generous and provided everything I needed during my stay. Also, they have a restaurant which food is perhaps the best I've tried during my trip. Thank you.
This is a unique property style in Japan. You are staying in temple lodgings (宿坊, shukubō). We enjoyed our stay, we had a great, simple room with all we needed. The room was on a separate floor to the workings of the temple. It also offered a unique opportunity to learn and observe the practices of the monks and the temple.
Best accommodation in Koyasan! Clean, comfortable and conveniently located one minute from a bus stop and within easy walking distance of several local attractions. The hosts are fantastic! So kind and happy to share information about the area as well as recommendations. I would greatly recommend their cafe for breakfast!
Cosy temple stay in a central part of Koyasan. Spacious rooms with tatami flooring and comfortable futon beds. There were several restaurants nearby, so we didn't need to rely on konbini food for dinner - would recommend Ponpoko which was 300m away. Watching the monks' morning ceremony at 6:30am was very special.
The host was excellent and very caring. She made sure that the stay was comfortable and that you well taken care off. In addition, she helped with tips to visit the various cultural centers in Koyasan, made arrangements to visit a prayer ceremony at a temple and be thoughtful about travel arrangements.
The check-in process was smooth and the grounds were very pretty. We enjoyed walking around the town of Koyasan and the cemetery at dusk/night. I loved the guided meditation and fire ritual! The area is beautiful. I liked the experience and temple stay quite a bit, but the rest of my family did not.
A buddhist temple lodging, very clean, comfortable and safe. Front desk was welcoming and helpful, walked us to room and explained the house rules. At night, very quiet, peaceful for contemplation and can hear the bell at designated time. Morning chanting ceremony before vegetarian breakfast.
The temple and room was absolutely beautiful. Staying at Rengejoin was the hilight of my trip to Japan. I 100% recomend you get the dinner/breakfast package and attend the afternoon meditation and Buddhist ceremony in the morning. Defenetly go to both, as they are each very different.
Amazing experience at Koyasan, we enjoyed every minute, the meditation, the ceremony, and the bonfire. This temple is great and ideally located, we loved our room, the staff speaks English very well and I recommend booking the night experience as it was a great one.
the monastery was beautiful. it’s in a great location walking distance to the big monastery, the daimon gate for hiking and other town stuff. terrific dinner best vegetarian meal in Japan. comfortable rooms w an additional heater. close to bus station.
The monks who took care of me were fabulous. Also, authentic Shojin food was delicious. I had nothing to complain about. The location was close to everywhere, and it was located in front of the bus stop, the bus from Koyasan cable station.
A beautiful and peaceful stay in an authentic Koyasan temple. The staff were all lovely (especially Karen who helped me to check in!) and the food was out of this world. I highly recommend a stay if you need a break from the cities!
an amazing experience all round. traditional ryokan style accommodation in temple lodgings. exceptional meals all served in traditional style. brilliant location right next to the
main multi temple complex.
