Attentive and friendly staff, outstanding dining experience for both dinner and breakfast. The meditation session as well as the morning ceremonies were amazing. The night cemetery tour was so informative and such a unique experience. Staying at Ekoinn was definitely a highlight for us and we cannot recommend this experience high enough!

The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. We loved everything we ate here and we are carnivores!

This place was perfect, very well located - 2 minutes away walking from the Oku no in.
I had some great recommandations for everything related to the area, really appreciated it!

We were very happy to stay in the Rengejo-in. Everything was perfect. We had the chance to participate to the meditation session and the morning mess. The dinner was perfect. Thank you!

Everything was wonderful (of course the futon on the floor with a wheat sack pillow was extremely uncomfortable, but to be expected).
Meals were beyond amazing.
The Japanese bath was an experience in nude bathing with strangers (and friends).
The sheets were lovely cotton.

The whole experience. This place shouldn't be put on the same scale as hotels.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay. There's an amazing cemetery and temple, definitely the best place. Doing shukubo's a great experience I recommend doing. Keep in mind that it can get suuuuper cold at night, so you should bring suitable clothes. It was hard to find restaurants to have dinner in. We had a late dinner and it was quite hard to manage. You should go thinking you have to eat your dinner at six o'clock. The temples close their doors quite early and you can't enter once they close, so you should have that in mind as well. The buses are good too, but very strict with punctuality (a bus litterally left in our faces and it was the last one and we had to walk). A short stay is good since you can see pretty much all in a day. We arrived at 1pm and left the other day at 10am and it was great. Everything in Koyasan is super quiet and chill.

The train and cable car were thrilling.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.
This is a Buddhist temple that has all the charm of the history and modern amenities like the bathroom and shower in the larger rooms. I was late to check in so I missed the dinner time but the staff was so kind and saved my dinner for me when I arrived so I could eat. It was amazing and such a wonderful hospitality that I will never forget! I was also ucky to be upgraded to a larger room with a private bathroom and a beautiful view of the garden. The meals provided are also delicious and made with such care. I was very impressed!
The monks and staff are kind and welcoming.
Things are explained clearly whether verbally or through the many notices and signs in English.
Meals and morning prayers start on time.
If you are respectful and punctual this is an excellent and worthwhile experience.
It's important to remember it's not a hotel, it's accommodation within a working monastery / temple.
Sekisho-in is very close to the Okunoin cemetery - just a few steps from the entrance. So a great choice for being close to that key attraction of Koyasan.
My stay at this hotel in Koyasan, managed by monks, was an unforgettable experience. The monks' hospitality and guidance throughout our stay were exceptional. The private dining in a traditional Japanese setting was exquisite, and the onsen was a relaxing highlight. Participating in the morning prayer provided a unique spiritual connection. The monks' parting gift added a personal touch to our departure. If you seek a remarkable and culturally rich stay in Koyasan, I highly recommend this hotel.
Beautiful temple and traditional room. Very welcoming staff and we especially enjoyed the wonderful food (like nothing we’ve ever tasted, loved that it was vegan but so flavourful and varied) and morning prayer. We had a wonderful stay, but don’t expect all the bells and whistles - this is a temple stay not a hotel! Good location, easy walk to everywhere.
This was one of the single most memorable stays with my family. Koyasan is an incredible town, full of history and deep, spiritual meaning - and Rengejoin made it even more special. My family enjoyed the evening meditation service and morning chanting ceremony. Mind you, we have no prior experience with Buddhism but even our teenage boys enjoyed it!
Unique experience of lodging in a beautiful buddhist temple. The place has a very special atmosphere. The (buddhist vegetarian) dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. The staff was super welcoming and friendly. Good onsen bath. Traditional Japanese-style room (tatami mats and futon beds) was really spatious and comfortable.
Even nicer than the photos look. The building looks newly refurbished and my room was clean, comfy and modern. The owners were super friendly and made me feel very welcome, including excellent food and service on their izakaya downstairs. The location is great for sightseeing in Koyasan, only 10 min walk from major temples.
Best accommodation in Koyasan! Clean, comfortable and conveniently located one minute from a bus stop and within easy walking distance of several local attractions. The hosts are fantastic! So kind and happy to share information about the area as well as recommendations. I would greatly recommend their cafe for breakfast!
The host was excellent and very caring. She made sure that the stay was comfortable and that you well taken care off. In addition, she helped with tips to visit the various cultural centers in Koyasan, made arrangements to visit a prayer ceremony at a temple and be thoughtful about travel arrangements.
Booked the junior suite. Spent one night in Koyasan. Included dinner in our room was very good! Got two very large rooms, one for sleeping and other for lounging in. Our toilet, sink, and shower were attached to the room. Most of the other rooms had to share a public bathroom and it closes at 9 PM.
Beautiful traditional japanese room in a buddhist temple very close to other places of interest in Koyasan. The meals are nicely presented also in a traditional tatami room and you can join meditation at 2 times during the day. Staff is super respectful and friendly
Such a beautiful temple! The monks were all so lovely and inviting, the morning prayer was a privilege to listen to and there was plenty of food to fill you up for dinner & breakfast.
The location is also amazing, Koyasan is absolutely worth the journey!
A beautiful and peaceful stay in an authentic Koyasan temple. The staff were all lovely (especially Karen who helped me to check in!) and the food was out of this world. I highly recommend a stay if you need a break from the cities!
The owner of this place was extremely kind. He helped me find things to do in Koyasan and figure out the bus schedule. All of the facilities were very clean and it felt like the owner took pride in what he does.
Onsen facilities and an amazing experience - the temple encouraged tourists to join in the morning Buddhist rituals. Easier to get to Koyasan than you expect via local trains, buses & cable car.
Best location, very nice staff, nice activities. Probably the best temple to stay in Koyasan.
The temple organize a tour at night that is an amazing experience.
