Everything.
The breakfast was a delicious way to start the day, I recommend paying for it.

I highly recommend to anyone staying in Koyasan, to stay here.

The owners were the kindest people on this planet, we arrive late in the evening after check in hours and they greeted us with smile and kindness, even prepare a dinner for us! Forget about temple lodging, this is THE best place in koyasan! Suzume-san rules :)

An unforgettable and peaceful experience at a unique accommodation. Great service from the moment we arrived, very clean facilities and enjoyable vegetarian meals. Morning prayers and the cemetery night tour are both recommended.

I emergency booked this place at the last minute as my hiking plans were interrupted by a bear. Within 10 mins of booking I arrived and was immediately greeted with open arms by Paola. Paola is an incredible host and an amazing person who went above and beyond to provide unbelievable food, inside information on the unmissable parts of Koyasan (including fire ceremonies), an intracate and beautifully designed home, and a cappuchino that far surpassed the expectations of even a Melbournian. Staying at Koyasan Space, though not originally part of my travel plans, was the highlight of my trip and will be something I remember forever. I was very lucky to have encountered that bear in the forest, as it lead me to this amazing experience. Thank you very much Paola.
Sojiin, located in the center of Mt. Koya, is a Japanese-style accommodation in a Buddhist temple located to the west of Sohonzan Kongobu-ji and in front of Danjo Garan.

There is a morning ceremony where you can communicate with the monks. Sleeping on a tatami was something new, be ready to eat only rice, pickles and muso.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay.
Koyasan's a beautiful place. We had a lovely stay. There's an amazing cemetery and temple, definitely the best place. Doing shukubo's a great experience I recommend doing. Keep in mind that it can get suuuuper cold at night, so you should bring suitable clothes. It was hard to find restaurants to have dinner in. We had a late dinner and it was quite hard to manage. You should go thinking you have to eat your dinner at six o'clock. The temples close their doors quite early and you can't enter once they close, so you should have that in mind as well. The buses are good too, but very strict with punctuality (a bus litterally left in our faces and it was the last one and we had to walk). A short stay is good since you can see pretty much all in a day. We arrived at 1pm and left the other day at 10am and it was great. Everything in Koyasan is super quiet and chill.

The train and cable car were thrilling.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.
Eko-in Temple lodging is a must do. Excellent location to the east of the town opposite the entrance to Oku-no-in Cemetery (recommend the optional evening monks tour). The temple staff were very friendly and informative. The stay included an afternoon meditation session, morning service and the fire ceremony (all a must and a great experience). The delicious evening meal and breakfast were delivered to the room and could be eaten wearing the supplied Yukata. Recommend room with private bathroom.
If you’re like me and dream of visiting Koyasan but have to travel on a budget, this is the place for you! The owner is so kind and generous with his advice about enjoying your time exploring this incredible, historic temple town and he even makes great food, too! I highly recommend staying there. It’s also awesome how close it is to the Okunoin Cemetery, which was my favorite part of Koyasan, and also makes attending the morning prayer service much easier because of its close proximity!
it’s a very well developed temple, it is good for tourists who are not very familiar Buddhism culture. it is very well developed to serve tourists, so in the other words, you feel more like in a hotel rather than in an actual temple. but it does provide good staying experience and modernized facilities, if those means a lot to you, this is the right choice. plus, they have a monk speaks fluent English.
unique stay in temple lodging. room was comfortable and food service to the room was added bonus. many small dishes so you got to try a little of everything which I enjoyed. koyasan is a very peaceful location and the gardens and public bath inside jokiin was well maintained and relaxing. the morning prayer was approx 30 minutes and the prayer room is magical!
Beautiful temple and traditional room. Very welcoming staff and we especially enjoyed the wonderful food (like nothing we’ve ever tasted, loved that it was vegan but so flavourful and varied) and morning prayer. We had a wonderful stay, but don’t expect all the bells and whistles - this is a temple stay not a hotel! Good location, easy walk to everywhere.
The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. We loved everything we ate here and we are carnivores!
This guest house is a very charming place to stay near Garan, Koyasan central temple complex. The whole property is spotless and we'll equipped. The hosts are extremely kind and generous and provided everything I needed during my stay. Also, they have a restaurant which food is perhaps the best I've tried during my trip. Thank you.
Cosy temple stay in a central part of Koyasan. Spacious rooms with tatami flooring and comfortable futon beds. There were several restaurants nearby, so we didn't need to rely on konbini food for dinner - would recommend Ponpoko which was 300m away. Watching the monks' morning ceremony at 6:30am was very special.
The temple is in a great location in the middle of Koyasan. Check in was easy and staff were nice. Our rooms looked out onto the lovely garden. Room was comfortable and clean. Lodgings were close to Kongōbu-ji and a 15 minute walk to Okunoin Cemetery. We enjoyed the prayer ceremony in the morning.
Absolutely stunning location on Koyasan, right next to some of the largest and most beautiful temples.
Gorgeous little temple garden where you are free to roam. Taking part in the morning service was a fascinating experience.
Dinner and breakfast were both excellent.
Beautiful traditional japanese room in a buddhist temple very close to other places of interest in Koyasan. The meals are nicely presented also in a traditional tatami room and you can join meditation at 2 times during the day. Staff is super respectful and friendly
Perfect location and a really nice temple. The monks were very kind and very attentive. The room is gorgeous and has a stunning view from the internal Japanese garden. The restroom has the most advanced TOTO.
The morning ceremony was wonderful, very emotional.
The staff were very friendly. The meals were authentically Japanese as were the beds (futons). Loved the morning prayers. The air conditioning was a savior as it was very warm. Excellent location to walk to other temples.
We were very well received in the temple, with staff very polite and eager. The meals were perfect. The location was great to see koyasan by walking.
Regarding koyasan, the temple and spirituality, it's is a must go.
I now can't imagine going to Koyasan without a temple stay. Our room was gorgeous and had a view of a Japanese garden. The highlight was meditation, morning prayers and the beautiful breakfast and dinner.
This is a convenient and comfortable stay located in the heart of Koyasan. The staff were accommodating and kind and the room was spacious and full of amenities for a great price!
Hojoin is a very welcoming temple perfectly located to explore Koyasan. The food is delicious and the onsen-style bath was perfect to warm up after a cold day walking.
Thank you so much Nori for a great experience. We will miss the guesthouse and Koyasan. I will definitely come back again the next time I am visiting Koyasan.
This was a pleasant place to stay in Koyasan. Very close to bus stop and one of the main temples. Fabulous dinner and breakfast. Lovely tranquil setting.
