Edgy and eclectic, Palermo is a symbol of all that Sicily stands for. From buzzing Vespas to the bustling Vucciria market, it simply brims with life.
Wonderful Palermo Cathedral glows radiantly in the Mediterranean sun. Nearby is the city’s last Sicilian Puppet Theatre, and opposite is a palm-filled park housing Roman mosaics, though the best are in the archaeological museum. At one end is the Norman Palace, a government building home to the fabulous Cappella Palatina whose gold mosaics are absolutely breathtaking.
Equally magnificent are the gold mosaics lining 12th-century Monreale Cathedral on the city’s outskirts. Wander the cloisters and note the varying columns and capitals – each pair is different.
Palermo also has fascinating churches: 2 of the oldest are 12th-century San Giovanni degli Eremeti and San Cataldo, each with red, Islamic-style domes. Gesú Church has an incredible Sicilian Baroque interior, while La Martorana’s frescoes are awe-inspiring. A street away is Quattro Canti, a crossroads with a fountain at each corner.
Other attractions include round Teatro Massimo, Mondello beach and Monte Pellegrino mountain overlooking the sea. You get fabulous views of this picnic spot as you fly into Palermo Airport before heading to your Booking.com accommodation.
Interesting Italian city, though very poor and dirty.
Interesting Italian city, though very poor and dirty. It has its bright spots, and the food is just fantastic. But outside of this, I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, the city is pretty miserable and the traffic is just terrible. People are a tad ignorant and the beaches looked neglected. We visited a beach outside the city, the Mondello Beach, which was pretty amazing. Also, the harbour next to it was scenic, and it offered some fascinating places to dine in. If it wasn't for the incredible hotel we stayed in and the restaurants we visited, I don't think that we would have enjoyed our stay. Another thing is, it can get real hot real fast. As for monuments, there are almost none that are worth it. The ones that were made accessible for tourists were either out of work, like the Fontana Pretoria, or weren't that interesting to look at in the first place.

We enjoyed our 3 days in Palermo and I think it was a perfect duration. Plenty to see both old and new. The Free Walking Tour was a highlight. Excellent guides and a small group of like minded travelers. We left them a 10E tip per person. The house tour of Conte Frederico was also well worth the price of admission. We had many good meals. Osteria Mercede was the recommended seafood; upscale but welcoming. We had a nice lunch at the Marina restaurant Culmina I believe that was the name. Modern sunny room with views of the boats. A quiet respite from the tourist crush downtown. 10 minute walk. Great service, sushi and seafood plus generous sandwiches. Menu featured pictures which made choosing difficult. We arrived from the airport midday using a private 64E limo transfer. It made life very easy as they met us at arrivals and helped us to the car. The hotel arranged this transfer. Upon departing we took the airport shuttle bus from in front of the Prada store across from Garibaldi Opera. 6E per person. We bought our tickets from the driver in cash. The bus is modern and air conditioned. Large luggage compartment below the bus. We hoped to make the 9:10am bus Sunday but when it arrived it had space only for those who already had their tickets. There were 10-15 others so the station master called HQ and they sent another bus so we only waited 15 minutes and not the scheduled 30 minute interval. Nice! Tickets can be bought at a specific Tabak shop near the Prada stop and maybe we should have planned ahead. The bus was full leaving Prada so we did not stop but I do not think this is normally an express bus. In 40 minutes we were at PMO. In sum we enjoyed Palermo. We never felt threatened by anyone or subject to crime risk and we walked all over town and through the outdoor markets morning to after midnight. There is some trash and some graffiti but larger Italian cities have these unfortunate blights. No more or less than Rome.

There is a lot to see and do in Palermo, and when you think you don’t want to see another church or museum, just wander through the city and soak in the atmosphere - there’s great street art to see as you meander through the backstreets and lanes, and several wonderful markets to explore, or a beach (Mondello) to spend a lazy morning or afternoon. And within easy reach by train or bus there is Cefalu (lovely in its own right) or the jaw-dropping wonders of Monreale. I’ve been twice - the first time for 4 days, the second time for 11 days, and I’m sure there’s still more to do when I go back!
Benny and B&B Tivitti saved me when I ran into an issue at my other accommodations. I called B&B Tivitti and spoke with Benny and he met me at the B&B five minutes later. As a solo traveler I was so grateful that he was so attentive to the issue I was experiencing and was able to get me a room so quickly. B&B Tivitti is perfect… clean, beautiful, the yummiest breakfast like one of the best breakfasts I’ve enjoyed in Sicily and Benny is super accommodating, helpful with recommendations, and just a wonderful person to know
Was the best room we rent in Sicily and general in Italy. The owner she was amazing. Warm welcome and she help us with our luggages. The location is amazing in 5min you are in center of Palermo and the most important monuments. In 2min walking is a free open parking, we park there our car without any issues. Every morning even the breakfast was not included they prepare coffee to my husband. And they clean the room every day. Amazing atmosphere and decoration. Highly recommended. Thank you so much for all those days ❤️
The best breakfast we had in Italy. Every morning, the host prepared a fresh homemade breakfast and also took into account any allergies of other guests.
The room was spacious, clean and cozy. The B&B is located near to the train station and in the middle of a tourist area with many nice restaurants and views.
The host was exceptional: When I got ill during my stay, she even contacted a doctor, translated for us and helped us buy medicine.
If we return to Palermo, for sure we will be staying here again!
This hotel made our visit to Palermo 100% more enjoyable. It is a historical site with many artifacts and collections which added to the uniqueness of the experience. On top of this the owner and staff were so friendly, helpful and went beyond their means to make their clients happy. The staff and Alessandro alone would make us want to come back. They have accommodated for our really early departure and tours. We were made to feel at home. I would totally recommend this hotel if you are visiting Sicily
The location is perfect for walking around Palermo, you really can't go wrong as it's just next to the old town on a quiet side street and only 10 min walk from the main train station offering great connection to the airport and other parts of Sicily. The room itself was spotlessly clean and spacious. Sadly the pool is not open in April which I didn't realise until the last minute. Our hosts were very accommodating and brought extra pillows very quickly upon request.
This is the great apartment in the middle of old Palermo. It is spacious and stocked with all the necessary things, including washing machine, espresso machine and even espresso capsules. The host was extremely friendly, helpful and gracious. It was my best stay in Sicily and I really enjoyed it. The location is very convenient to everything. The only reason I didn't give the maximum points for location, I reserve those to the ones with the sea views.
The host was very friendly and gave some helpful advice about where to eat and shuttle bus to airport etc. When he wasn't there his son was just as friendly . The room was very large, very comfortable and kept clean by a nice lady. The location is excellent for the centre of Palermo everywhere within walking distance. The breakfast was impressive, quality and selection is the best we have had in Sicily. We would definitely stay here again
We started and ended our Sicily trip in Palermo, and returned to Palermo after a stay in Cefalu close to the start of our trip. Each time we chose to stay at Al Piazza Marina Palace because the people who run it are so friendly, the location is fantastic and the breakfast has many delicious choices. We experienced three different rooms in the Palazzo and they were all spacious and thoughtfully decorated with little special touches.
An exceptional, generous and beautiful place to stay in a tree-liked neighborhood in Palermo. Every detail has been considered, every person you meet is kind and helpful, and the rooms are extremely comfortable with every amenity—more than most luxury hotels! The breakfast is superb and intimate. I look forward to staying again as Family Affair is truly one of those places you want to keep a secret because it is just that good!
The staff were amazing. They helped organize our taxis upon arrival and for day trips. Massimo and Alessio were very informative and gave tips of different places to visit throughout Palermo. They were extremely kind and welcoming! And the location was perfect !!! Close to the train station as well as in the city centre near all the action. The B&B also had breakfast every morning which was delicious and classic for Sicily.
The property was excellent! The staff enhanced this making our stay awesome! Good location. Nice rooms and great outside patio area. I really can’t say enough good things about property and especially our host. She make excellent recommendations, helped with airport transfer, trip to beach and even breakfast. Best host and stay on our two week Italy vacation!
Casa Ricasoli is a homely, beautiful flat located in one of the best neighbourhoods in Palermo. It looks absolutely beautiful, very artsy and has everything you need to have an amazing stay in Palermo. Marcello also provided a 5 star hotel breakfast for our stay, including homemade muffins! This will be your home away from home in Sicily.
Absolutely my favorite place after multiple trips in Palermo staying at five different apartments. Terrace is just exceptional at twilight, bakery next door is so convenient, enjoyed the stroll past the cathedral after dinner etc. Staff is so friendly, bathrooms were spotless!, decor is just beautiful!! Felt like a boutique hotel!
We travelled across Sicily & Italy and this was by far the best breakfast we had in the whole holiday. The host is very attentive, the apartment was nice and clean. It was only a 10 minute walk to the old town. We took a train from the airport which was an excellent service.
I was travelling around Italy and Sicily this spring and Fronte Mare Arenella was the best place I was staying in. Very cosy, clean and homely place. The host Monica was wonderful and helpful and I felt very welcomed. I cannot recommend it enough!
Georgia is the kindest host you’ll ever meet. She spent an hour planing my itinerary in Sicily for me.
Apartment is immaculate.
Located in an upscale part of Palermo, near great restaurants, a supermarket, and a 3 min walk from the airport bus.
Great location to visit Palermo. The hotel was decorated very nicely. The on-site restaurant was delicious for both breakfast and dinner. The size of the room was decent especially for a boutique hotel. The staff was very welcoming and friendly.
Really well appointed rooms and in a superb location near some of the best bars and restaurants in Palermo. Lovely attention to detail with lighting and the bed was the most comfortable of our trip. Feels more like a boutique hotel room.
It is just on the bank of the sea, quiet area but close to the town (20min by bus) , clean and comfortable appartment, nice hosts.
The beach is much cleaner than the rest of Palermo.
It was not a luxury hotel but we loved it.
Breakfast was plentiful. Liked that you could do buffet or order off the menu. Hotel service and everything about this property was amazing. Location is perfect. If you like luxury this is where you stay in Palermo
