Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodation includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.
Historic and friendly. Cool side streets. Creative window displays. Better price points than places like Como and Milan. The Tower of Trees is unique and will likely be the highlight of your trip. Puccini, Puccini, Puccini. He's everywhere, including his wonderful statue in a charming Piazza. Two dinner recommendations: Da Francesco and Lucca in Tavola: Cucina Casalinga, plenty of great food and character.

Staff at Hotel Marti were excellent in every respect. They were so very friendly and helpful. The hotel was spotlessly clean.
Luca itself is a lovely town; lots to see, people friendly, great atmosphere.would stay here again. Advise having your own transport as hotel is slightly off the beaten track. Hotel arranges taxi if needed and prices are reasonable.

Definitely recommend Lucca. Don't skip it! It's a hidden gem and super beauty. Being inside the walled city really transports you back in time and you kind of get the experience of how life might have been like back then.

Lucca is a delight!
Lucca is a delight! That's why it is so crowded during tourist season, which was a bit dismaying, as we arrived in August — Europe's holiday time. However, when that slowed down at the beginning of September, it was wonderful! There are so many music and art experiences, and just walking the city and the large wall that surrounds it is like being in a living museum surrounded by a huge park. Of course, the restaurants are many and the food fabulous!
We particularly appreciated the commitment to responsible recycling. Trash and recycling bins are placed all around the city.

Great place to walk around and soak up everything.
Great place to walk around and soak up everything.
Within walking distance from the train station although difficult for suitcases on wheels and I don't think taxis enter inside the city walls.
Full of hidden surprises around each corner.
We only had 2 days - think 4 days would have been better.
Absolutely lovely. The property it’s an oasis of calm & serenity as it has a massive garden in the back that seems more ljke a park with big tall trees than a simple garden.
Staff is so kind and nice. Really makes the whole place and staying there a wonderful experience.
If you’re driving or cycling stay here not in a hotel. Location is 10 min drive from Lucca city centre so a vehicle (of any shape or form) is necessary

Excellent eye to detail in every aspect of the hotel and grounds. The grounds are a labour of love! Very attentive staff made us feel very at home! Highly recommended!!
