Breakfast good, bar service needs improvement. We waited 20 mins for drinks after being asked twice for our order and then the cocktail was poor. They did remove the drinks from the bar bill but it tainted our evening.

Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodation includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.

Of all the "hill towns" in Tuscany and Italy, Lucca remains our favorite. It has it all- wonderful compared to the larger cities overrun with tourists. Beautiful Puccini and Boccherini concerts. Truly friendly shop and restaurant owners, as in many of the smaller Tuscan towns. Great choice of restaurants and gelaterias. A wonderful passagiata every night. There was a memorable sculpture exhibition there in May. Viva Tuscany- Viva Lucca!

Lucca is a compact mediaeval town where everything is within easy walking distance.
This was my third trip and there were still places I have not explored. This time I made a point of visiting the Cathedral and associated museums.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and would offer a few suggestions:-
1, Cathedral - excellent leaflet explaining. Would be improved if the age of the different elements was indicated - by colours or hatching.
2. Church of St Giovanni and Reparata - wonderful excavations but signage could be much better. The coloured maps were good, but more help relating them to the features on the ground would have been appreciated.
3. Cathedral Museum - superbly set out with very useful information sheets in each room. Noticed that some visitors were confused by the numbers for the audio guide, thinking they related to the printed sheet. The difference needs to be made clearer. Also, the English translation could be improved.

Lucca is a great small place for relaxing and enjoying the Italian way of life. It's got a lot of History and summer festivals, comics and cinema festivals too. That's why it's called 'La Cittã d'Arte' (The City of Art).
It's also a good basis/starting point in case you wanna visit other places in Tuscany. For example, Pisa is only about a 25-min train ride from Lucca, among others.
For a fresh made panini or burger, head to Porta Santa Maria (one of the big gates that give access to Lucca's old town) and find 'Chiosco Il Gatto Nero' - a panini/subs kiosk. 5 Euros will definitely get you a proper sandwich there!!!

Lucca is a very special place and the walled city even more special with Albergo San Martino being the ideal place to stay. The staff are as charming as the city and the comfortable well appointed rooms and the delicious breakfasts complimenting the whole experience. The architecture and townscape provide the environment for dining experiences like no other and ease of access from Pisa using the PisaMover and train from Pisa Central Railway Station couldn't be easier.

Serene country side, great place to relax.
Serene country side, great place to relax. So many things to do and see so coming back here each day was amazing. Lucca's walled city is very big, could spend at least 2 days walking through. The wall is so big it has a double lane road for what used to be for cars and is now used for exercise and the enjoyment of walking around the city. Location is close to Pisa, and also Cinque Terre. We actually drove to Santa Margherita and caught the ferry to Portofino for the day. 1.5hr drive but definitely worth it.
Property was beautiful and located in the heart of the historic district of Lucca with easy access to sightseeing, shopping, and restaurants. The convenient location allowed us to return mid-day as needed for breaks. Loved the windows overlooking the streets. Breakfast was very helpful as Lucca was our first stop in Italy and we tended to sleep later and it relieved the stress of trying to "figure things out" right away!
The staff were friendly and gave great advice. The location is outside the city wall but close to a gate. This made it ideal in many ways. We travel with a particular car and are always confronted with parking issues. Our last hotel boasted an underground car park , and though the staff were wonderful the car could not enter due to the ramp angle. Here in Celide there was zero problem.
This is a brand new, sparkling clean room with very polite staff. We stayed there for 4 nights with our girls and had a great time. It is in the castle in a convenient spot close to everything but not noisy. Our host offered to bring us a small refrigerator after our request, which we appreciated very much.
It was the perfect stay for resting in our 2 week roadtrip to Italy.
We were welcomed warmly by Giovanni and our room was immaculate and quirky and charming. The bathroom was spacious and the shower was heavenly! The only drawback was that the room was very warm! We tried to turn the heat down to no avail. Otherwise a lovely stay, and we adore Lucca! Also breakfast was perfect. A charming hotel and a great location! Highly recommend.
Beautiful boutique hotel, with a idyllic pool surrounded by olive trees and pine trees, and the sound of cigales (with very nice pool service!)
Everyone was very helpful and kind. We found the place ideal to visit Pisa and Lucca from, and come back to this oasis of calm and freshness in the summer.
we have been travelling around that part of Italy for around a week, staying in different accommodations. This one has been by far the best. The owner is very friendly and gentle, the room and furniture are new and very clean. The building was very quiet, and the location was excellent for us.
It was just one night stop in Lucca and we chose an hotel in the city centre to take the maximum from our short stay. The hotel could not be more in the centre! Very good location, the staff was super friendly and the room big and very comfortable for a family of 5 + dog. Breakfast also good.
This hotel was the best hotel we have ever stayed at in Italy.
Everything was awesome, cozy, quiet and cleen room, friendly staff and comfortable beds.
There was a wide range of food options for the breakfast.
We felt in love with Lucca and this place, so we even extended our stay!
A real gem. Everywhere inside the walls is within walking distance. Serina was a delight and sorted out taxis for us and looked after us brilliantly. Rooms are the small format that you would expect in an Italian city hotel, but the inner and outer courtyards were really special.
Separate bathroom, which we had to ourselves. Clean and bright. Largest shower we experienced in Italy. Appreciated the recommendation for visiting Lucca. Fridge and kettle available for use. Would definitely book a stay at John B&B again.
The city of Lucca was wonderful and so was this hotel. The facility was easy to find, modern, quiet and clean. The staff was terrific! And the breakfast buffet was the best breakfast we had on our whole trip!
We cannot recommend this place more! It is right in the center of Lucca, with parking place, very comfortable rooms, and clean! Elena and the rest are very nice people and of course the breakfast is amazing!
This is an absolute Gem in Lucca . Beautifully appointed communal areas and bedrooms but the absolute star was Pina . The receptionist . So friendly kind and helpful a real credit to the hotel . Thank you
Must be one of the best locations in Lucca inside the walls. The fact that you can drive to the hotel and have the car parked in the yard, is exceptional for this hotel.
