Dave is very welcoming and friendly host, he showed us Pulau Merah and the surroundings, which was so beautiful! Would recommend you the banana pancakes for breakfast, so good. From the room to the beach is only 3 minutes walk through the jungle of coconut and papaya trees 🤙 Very nice stay!

Java Turtle Lodge Meru Betiri, hotel in Pasanggaran

Set 400 metres from Rajegwesi Beach, Java Turtle Lodge Meru Betiri offers air-conditioned accommodation with a terrace.

My wife and I were extremely lucky to stumble across this place during our 7 month motorbike tour around Asia. Hadi, his family and all the local staff were amazing, friendly and incredibly welcoming. Hadi has created and built a beautiful homestay with such care and attention which is located in a beautiful part of Java and very close to the beach. The lodge is new and provides very comfortable and clean accommodation some of the best we have stayed in. Breakfast of eggs and bread is included and lunch and dinner is available to buy and includes, chicken, rice, vegetables, tempeh and sweetcorn fritters. What makes this place special and unique however, is the organised tour to Sukamade beach located in Meru Betiri National Park to explore, discover and observe the turtle swim up to the beach to lay its eggs. Here the locals run a conservation programme to protect the eggs laid on the beach from predators and poachers. The eggs are collected and kept in the hatchery until they hatch and are released into the sea. The tour includes a full day, one nights stay in the park and a morning of releasing the baby turtles back to their home the following morning. All well organised, includes a private Jeep and guide, food and accommodation for the night, trek and boat to Green Bay. It is a little on the expensive side but worth every penny and such organised tours provide support to the local community, the programme and the conservation. It is worth noting that whilst the homestay is one of the closest available to the beach, due to the unmade road it is still a 2 hour journey to the park. We stayed 2 nights at the homestay, 1 night before the overnight stay in the park and 1 night after. If you have time I would recommend this, but if not 1 nights stay before with 1 night in the park is sufficient. Incredible experience and we wish Hadi and his family all the best.

Sukamade (turtle beach), Teluk Ijo/Green Bay, and Pulau Merah/Red Island are all worth visiting for at least a week in total. Camping is available at areas near or at all three locations, but homestays are also available close by. Sukamade turtle viewing is at midnight and the release is in the morning, so at least one night is required there. Green Bay is an incredible beach and you’ll need at least 2-3 hours to take it all in. Pulau Merah for a surf lesson (with a local) for under $20 (2019), stay for a few days and enjoy the chill beach vibes.

We stayed in Pulau Merah and this is the perfect place for surfing, great beach walks and lots of simple, cheap and very good Warungs. There is lots of trips you can do from there like the Nationalpark, great beaches you can access by boat or the Ijen Vulcano...
