FAQs about hotels in Hvar

Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

didnt spend too much time in Hvar town. We were mostly secluded at our small hotel but we loved the island and it was pretty easy to get to and plenty of ferries to time your arrival and departure easily.

Hvar is expensive so do not go expecting it to match the cost of living in Greece, Spain or Turkey. Eating-out is pretty much 'Fine Dining' everywhere and is apparently priced for the super yacht clientele. Supermarket prices are also more than London! It's a shame as many locals & Europeans are being priced out and this trend looks set to continue. But it's a very picturesque harbour & fortress town. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are now back to work to pay it off! 😂

have been to hvar for 2n3d with friends .. there are loads of apartments on the island .. choose one facing to the beach and closeby to the square.. loads of islands , beachbar to visit nearby .. party all day Nd night .. we also took a self drive drive boat to visit the nearby islands and beach bar .. do take a insurance if possible of possible damage if hire selfdrive boat .. operator gets rude and do not cooperate if things go wrong.. carpedium diem beach is very popular to visit in day and night .. there are many bars and restaurant in hvar town nearby square.. almost all the food joints closes by 11pm .. then after only drink is available .. overall great place for family as well as for friends to visit..

We liked the quick easy access to Pakleni Islands. We had 6 teenagers with us and they loved the speed boat ride over to islands and loved swimming in different bays. We could have spent more time on Hvar and taken scooters around island

Hvar is a beautiful place, full of character. On an evening it’s really busy around the bars and restaurants. Mostly young people. We did eat well and there’s plenty of choice. You may have to book certain restaurants but we were ok.

The hotel has all of the expected facilities, but is a little bit tired. It is like a very plush hotel from a 1960s James Bond film. I understand it is now under new management and with a little bit of money spent on it to tidy it up (e.g. fix the swimming pool outlets), create consistent branding across the hotel (e.g. replace the commercially randomly branded umbrellas), introduce a shuttle service to HVAR town it could be truly great and in very high demand.

Beautiful room in the heart of Hvar, close to the marina (and ferries arrival) and to the heart of the village. The room is part of the Heritage hotel and shares its facilities, but is located two streets away. This is not a problem since the staff is extremely helpful with the luggage and any other issue: honestly, very grateful for that. The breakfast is served in a beautiful patio in the shadow: nice, good and cozy. I strongly recommend this place!

Everything about our stay was excellent. We were met at the ferry and had help to get our luggage to the hotel, our room was upgraded to a larger room, and the rooms themselves were modern, clean and comfortable, the breakfast was exceptional and the staff were fantastic. Their recommendations on what to do and where to eat for our short stay in Hvar made it a stand out on our trip.
