The town is quiet, smaller and less touristy than Chania.
The town is quiet, smaller and less touristy than Chania. It felt much more authentic and less congested. Public transport is easy to access and taxis reasonable. Tours to other parts of western Crete can be either joined here or you can easily catch a bus to Chania to meet the tour there. Good seafood options (Katrina Hotel) and at the old port. Steer clear of the waterfront area if you want to savour the authentic side of the town, as that area is full of touristy restaurants, people drinking and loud nightclubs. The beach swimming was lovely during hot evenings.

The old fort and historic old town were charming.
The old fort and historic old town were charming. The waterfront restaurants were idyllic. The little narrow windy streets were were fabulous for shopping. And it was much quieter and less chaotic than Heraklion or Chania.

Great place to visit but careful when you rent a vehicle, it’s too tight and watch out for the motorcycles 🏍️ because the riders do not follow the laws and they can show upon your sides without warnings!

The town itself is very nice. Old town is beautiful.
The town itself is very nice. Old town is beautiful. The food is fantastic, and the sea is lovely.
We went in August however and it was so hot that we could barely do anything. We were there for a wedding, so we did that and then went out in the evenings. But even in the evening it was so hot.
If I ever went back to Crete it would be in the autumn or even the winter.
Sunset Apartments are a great choice if you want a base in Rethymno for spending time on the beach there as well as exploring the island of Crete. We got an excellent price for the basement apartment which was very cool, even in the soaring Greek heat! The beach is meters away, there's a limited amount of free parking (you can find more free parking places in the area too if needed) and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants around. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable.
This is a very modern and clean property in the perfect location next to the beach. The family that own it are very friendly and great hosts who make sure you have everything you need. The old town is a 20 minute walk and has lots of great restaurants. The private sunbeds with bar service on the beach opposite the suites are a real bonus.
This is a beautiful family run hotel situated on the beach. I would rate it above 3 stars just below a 4 star hotel. We had a refurbished very clean room with a sea view which was spacious and comfortable.
Staff is really friendly. Excellent recommendations for small stunning beaches and good restaurants.
Hotel kept very clean. Nice view on the sea and 15 mntn walk into the old town.
