Stayed in the quieter village of Kastraki but drove the short distance to adjoining larger town of Kalabaka to see the 11c Byzantine church.
The busier streets of Kalabaka are not overwhelming and offer a contrast to the gentler vibe of Kastraki.
Kalabaka is a commercial centre with busy streets and cafes, some of which continue the improper practice of caging songbirds for the ‘interest’ of customers!
We were pleased we stayed in Kastraki at the Doupiani House Hotel and appreciated the evening strolls through quiet jasmine-scented streets, where we were occasionally accompanied by wandering tortoises or inquisitive local cats.

Meteora was by far, one of our favorite places in Greece.
Meteora was by far, one of our favorite places in Greece. The landscape is unique and amazingly beautiful. The monasteries are incredible pieces of architecture, and the little churches inside, are real jewels of Byzantine art. The sites are really crowded and parking is not easy (and this was in May!!!) also, the churches are so small that sometimes queuing is necessary in order to access them. Even though we checked previously and carefully the opening times, two of the six monasteries could not be visited without any apparent reason, which was very inconvenient for us. The whole region is dedicated to tourism so great hotels and restaurants are everywhere.

The monasteries are lovely but the public transport (bus) to move around them is limited if you only want to visit one or two. Our time was limited so we took the 9am bus up to the main meteron monastery and walked down to Varlaam and Rossenou (St Barbara) convent. We were finished here by 12 but had to walk back to Kalambaka as there was no bus until 14:30 and we had a bus to catch for our onward journey. We walked down to Kastraki and had a quick bite and walked on to Kalambaka. It was an easy walk and took about 40 mins but this was in April so not too hot.

Kalabaka is a city with traditional houses and Meteora is very close. You can visit some of the monasteries. We went to the museum of physical history with animals and birds that lived there, which was very nice, to the mushroom museum and to the digital projection center of Meteora's history and culture. The food also was excellent.
The hospitality and comfort of this hotel was incredible! Anna Maria and her son welcome you like a member of their family! And I was so impressed with the sleek and intelligent design of the guest room. The rain shower head, the slippers, the cozy pillows and linens. Perfect! Every need was met and then some! The location is also wonderful to enjoy the area while also keeping quiet. Easy walk to town and brilliant suggestions made for dining and things to do! This stay was one of the highlights of our trip to Greece. We are so grateful!
Amazing stay at Mythos Guesthouse !
We arrived in the afternoon, had a great welcome with a very useful map and advice.
The room was great, amazing view on the Meteores. Perfect decor. The beds were very confortable and the bathroom was one of the best we've had in Greece (and we've been travelling to Greece and Crete for 15 years !)
The hotel was just a few hundred meters away from the town center, great restaurants and little shops (gifts as well as supermarkets).
Thank you for everything, we definitely recommend !
We really enjoyed our overnight stay at the hotel. The best thing about it are the great views of Meteora from the balcony. Picture Perfect! The hotel is quite large and spacious, plenty of parking in front of the hotel. The rooms are clean and fine although and basically comfortable. Also - don't forget to bring your bathing suit if you want to enjoy the spa with its swimming pool, sauna, salt room and hamam. A lovely way to wind down your day after hiking Meteora's cliffs!
Accomodation in villa San Giorgio was very pleasant. Room was very clean , spaceus, beds very comfortable. We got everything that you could need, towels, shower gel, hairdryer, mini fridge, terrace with table and chairs and beautiful view to meteora hills and monastery of Saint Nicolas. Location of hotel is at the end of beautiful village Kastraki and it was very peaceful too. Breakfast included was basic but very tasty and more than enough to get day started.
Real gem, I recommend it fully. They welcomed us at 1 am ,cause we arrived really late at the hotel, with warm towels and complimentary drinks. They gave as a nice room with view at meteora. The rooms are really nice and themed, we got the phantom of the opera. Breakfast was Delicious and you had a lot of option. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our stay there. If we had to stay in kalambaka again, we would definitely book here again .
This hotel was wonderful, we had a room with a view on the spectacular rocks of Meteora and the peaceful lush gardens of the locals. The breakfast was huge so we always had left overs which we took with us for our lunch. The location is perfect for getting to the walking paths around the Meteora quickly and the owners were very helpful in giving advise on places/local events to visit and they were lovely!
It is a good place to visit Meteora whether by bus or on foot. It is the second near hotel to the famous sightseeing points. The view from some of the rooms are amazing to see the huge stones and the red roofs village. It is so serene and unique that you can not but fall in love with it. The hostess is very nice and considerate to help a lot for everything. I can't wait to go back again.
I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Rex. My room had a beautiful view of Meteora and even though I was on the street side, it was quiet at night. The breakfast was good and the location was excellent. Right across the street was a little grocery store where I could pop in for fruit or water and there was a big selection of restaurants nearby. The town of Kalambaka was adorable.
The hotel is located at the begging of the village but that’s okay because the village is small and there are tavernas literally everywhere- you walk a few minutes only. We had a nice view from the balcony (rocks of Meteora). The host was polite. The hotel was well furnished, but it’s the old one so also the room was old style furnished. Beds were comfy.
The view is amazing, the hotel is on great calm location, away of noise, cars..
The lobby area was very nice.
We will definitely come in spring or summer months so we can use the pool and enjoy the view.
Meteora is a must see. We also visited Trikala Christmas Market and the kids loved it.
The staff was nice and very polite.
They have friendly stuff, which respond quickly. The hotel is well located with rooms that also have a view of the Meteora. It is a 4* hotel, but the standard in these countries may be slightly different than in some others ... Of course, it is a very decent hotel with good staff. I would be happy to go back again.
Only an 8 minute walk from the train station. Easy 5 minutes to centre of Kalambaka. Great view. Receptionist was so accommodating in switching our room when we didnt have the bed selection we had booked. Quick to respond for recommendations for tavernas. All around fantastic hotel
View was exceptional - one of the best in Greece (and that is hard to do!). The staff/owner was very helpful in organizing our visit to Meteora and finding the most wonderful tavernas to try while we stayed there. We could not have asked for a more special place to stay.
Hosts were very gracious and hospitable. Host came down to help us find the hotel. Very nice efficiency apartment, 5 minutes from the road leading to the monasteries. Great value for the money. One of the nicest places we have stayed during our many trips to Greece!
One of the most lovely hotels we’ve ever stayed in! Beautiful setting, excellent breakfast, wonderful staff… you truly feel cared for as a guest here. It’s a perfect base for seeing the Meteora monasteries as well. We will definitely be back again someday!
Good location in Kalambaka close to the road leading to the monasteries. Tasty breakfast - restaurant also overlooking Meteoras. Great room, large bathroom, shower larger than any bathroom I rented in Greece :) In hotel is a large parking.
