Poor really. Not much choice, and no condiments without asking. And no toast without asking. Not that impressed.

The Shore, hotel in Stromness

Set in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands region, The Shore is located 1.9 km from Highland Park Distillery. This 3-star hotel offers luggage storage space. The hotel has family rooms.

Not very much really. We had to book into another hotel further along from ours, we were then taken back to our room to be shown where it was located. After going through a few corridors and doors we were shown our room. The room was clean and adequate for one nights stay, after getting off the 11-00pm ferry, we were disappointed! There was no view from both windows, we were facing brick walls of a rubbish dump garden. The other hotel was fully booked, because it was obviously more appealing than ours. Breakfast was not included, and was £35 extra to the £160 we paid for our room. Absolute scandalous!

There is not a great deal of choice for accommodation in Kirkwall. I was concerned about this hotel but it actually turned out nicer than we expected. Breakfast was pretty good.

Grainbank Mews, hotel in Stromness

Grainbank Mews, a property with a garden, is set in Kirkwall, 16 km from Standing Stones of Stenness, 18 km from Ring of Brogdar, as well as 17 km from Ness of Brogdar.

We loved the location and the very upmarket feel of the guest house. We could very easily hop on a local bus to go to the ancient standing stones, Skara Brae and the Italian chapel. The bus stops were just outside Grainbanks. We enjoyed the lovely freshly made fruit salad at breakfast and I was pleased to have GF toast provided. Albert and Aileen were delightful hosts who made us feel very welcome.

Stromness is a small town with an old world feel.

Stromness is a small town with an old world feel. It is a good location to get across to some other islands (especially Hoy, which is why we stayed there). It is also quite a good location to get to the major archaeological sites. The Stromness Hotel is the only large hotel in the town and this is a functional but rather soulless place (we understand the locals have tended to boycott the place since the current owners decided to make it alcohol free) . We stayed early June and there were only other 2 restaurants plus a couple of take-aways and the restaurants booked up really early (ideally you needed to book at least a day ahead!)

Stromness is a great base for exploring Orkney.

Stromness is a great base for exploring Orkney. The town is charming, with winding narrow streets of small independent shops. Eating out can be a challenge but the deli, bakery and small supermarket provide options for picnics. There is plenty of public parking at the harbourside.

Stromness is the perfect place to stay for visiting the many historical and archaeological sites in West Mainland. There are magnificent cliff walks on the west coast, and plenty of bird-watching opportunities.

The views and attractions were outstanding.

The views and attractions were outstanding. We were not prepared for the fact that cruise ships arrived at the island causing large crowds at the attractions. Also though many places the staff were helpful and friendly sometimes we felt service could improve in regards to how we were treated as visitors to the island. As far as the island itself it was an astounding place to visit with beautiful scenery and fascinating history.

Walking slowly through historical Stromness—see the blue plaques on the buildings -was fascinating. Don’t miss the Stromness Museum, a treasure trove of historical artifacts and the nicest man staffing the front desk, answering any questions you may have. I loved the site of Login’s Well, where ships of old, including Captain Cook’s ships, came to draw fresh water for their voyages. You are literally walking in their footsteps here.

Stromness is a lovely town with a lot of quirky streets and alleyways. We loved the town but there are very few places to eat and it is a struggle to find somewhere. Luckily our Hosts at our B&B 45 John Street did the most amazing evening meals if you wished to eat in.
