Great stay, Jovial helpful staff and great food. Very enjoyable, would recommend. We were staying for the outdoor screening of Withnail and I. So the comfort of the Inn was preferable to a tent on a hill! The photo is of the actual phone box that was used in the film, it is just around the corner from the Pub (Nerds)

We were on our way from Devon to Glasgow, and wanted somewhere not too far off the M6 to break the journey up for a night. We honestly couldn't have picked anywhere better than The Greyhound in Shap. Just a few minutes off the motorway, but it feels so tranquil and rural, you'd never think you were so close to a major route. Excellent as a base for the Lake District, but far enough out of the busiest tourist spots to offer great value. Such a lovely little hotel with a proper pub/restaurant downstairs, serving great food and beer. Our room was small but perfectly-formed, with a super comfortable bed. We will definitely use this place again if we're up in the area again. Highly recommended.

We stayed only 1 night and ate at the hotel, but it might be worth driving 4 miles to Alston if staying more than 1 night. The food was OK, but a little pricey.
I would definitely consider staying there again to break our journey from the Midlands to Scotland.

Location is just off motorway.
Location is just off motorway. Website states 2 restaurants and bar selling food until 10pm, this is not the case. Only 1 restaurant with limited choice and very basic food with vegetables and potatoes undercooked. Rooms are in need of refurbishment and lift and restaurant needed a clean. Food on the floor at our table from breakfast sitting. Wine is expensive for what it was. Receptionist and bar person were lovely but manager was rude and abrupt.

It was very peaceful location.
It was very peaceful location. Not far from M6 so ideal for a stop over or if staying in Lakes great for going off to spend the day out. Even better being able to come back to the peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the busy towns in the Lake District. Food was great so get a half board stay as really good value for money. Lovely places to walk through their own woods and see the delightful red squirrels that are resident there. Get free food for them from reception
Excellent hotel. Friendly helpful staff with top-notch customer service skills.
Good sized and very clean en suite rooms.
Breakfast & evening meals were 10/10.
All in all an enjoyable stay and we felt at ease during all of our 3 night stay.
Would highly recommend. Iain & lesley (Evesham worcestershire)
The staff were fantastic and couldn't have been more helpful. The hotel was well fitted out and the room was very comfortable. The location is great - except when it's at the far end of the village and you've just walked 18 miles over the fells.... :-) But it's worth the extra yards!
Great place, geared up for those walking the coast to coast, so highly recommended if you are doing this. Easy check in, nice owner and decent room and facilities. Fish and Chip shop in Shap has eat in restaurant, great place to go to eat and then local pub for couple of pints.
Beautiful cottage, very comfortable bed and great value for money. Loved the fact that they are dog friendly and that our furry family members were able to come with us! Shap Abbey is very close by and worth having a walk around if you want to take your dogs for a walk nearby.
The hotel is nice, comfortable for just one night. It's far to reach but you can definitely enjoy the quiet and the rooms are comfortable enough, same for the bed. It was clean overall, can't complain.
The staff is incredibly nice, I would come back for one more night;
