THE BRUCE, hotel in Port Charlotte

We spent to little time on Islay this trip. So next rime we will book directly with the staff as she was brilliant fixing up a Bookings.com mistake. The view from the upstairs bedrooms, of their tiny harbour and surrounding tidal flats is peaceful.

No. 1 Charlotte Street, hotel in Port Charlotte

Located in Port Ellen, No. 1 Charlotte Street has a garden, shared lounge, bar, and free WiFi. The rooms in the hotel are fitted with a coffee machine.

The lady receptionist who also ran the bar was very welcoming. There is nothing to fault. Residents were able to eat takeaways in the bar. I didn’t but that was nice. The whole place looked freshly decorated.

The Islay Hotel, hotel in Port Charlotte

On Islay’s famous Whisky Coast, in the fishing village of Port Ellen, overlooking the harbour and marina and just 2 hours by ferry from Kennacraig on the Scottish mainland, The Islay Hotel offers a...

The Islay Hotel is a great location for shops, eating out, distilleries and beaches. We found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. Our room was spotlessly clean and well organized. The breakfast was a very good start to our day. In addition to the hotel, we recommend the café at Ardbeg distillery for lunches and teas. On the road to Bowmore (on the right-hand side) is the Balaclava Byre Farm Shop and Restaurant, which also provides delicious food, using local produce from Islay.

The staff were outstanding, so friendly and nothing seemed to be an issue for them. Rarely have I ever stayed somewhere that compares with the genuine warmth and kindness. My bedroom was a little disappointing as it was very small and would have been near impossible if I was sharing. It needs an upgrade, as does the bathroom which was a bit below standard. The food and bar were excellent and can't really be faulted. If the bedrooms do get an upgrade, then this will be difficult to beat.

Beautiful well preserved Island village with peaceful shoreline and harbour in a good location for exploring nature preserves, clifftop vilages and unspoilt Atlantic beaches. Excellent community run campsite with excellent restaurant as long as you book for the evening. There is a popular sea food restaurant and hotel in addition to the one we stayed in. Suggest you plan your eating in advance as they tend to be fully booked at peak times. Visit the local distillery at Bruichladdie or the atlantic coast villages of port na haven or port wemyss.

Several eateries, you mostly need to book in advance. All within walking distance of each other. Distillery close by driveable or you can walk /cycle , there is a made path along the coast . There is a little museum/info/visitor centre. There is a post office, shop and petrol station. Attractive little village, residents very friendly , small beach and walk at the front . Light house close by.

A small quiet friendly village on the Island with a good restaurant plus a local hotel with bar also serving meals. A local spar shop catering for small items with the town of Bowmore a few miles away catering for larger needs. A very enjoyable place to spend some chill time with many interesting places to visit on the island not least the abundance of whisky distilleries.

Comfortable beds.Lovely well equipped Kitchen.Loads of books about local knowledge and a comfy chair to sit in to look! Good situation for touring the island, I had a car which I think would be essential, but I was only there for 3 days , not long enough! so maybe with a bit more time you could manage with public transport and walking.BUT you wouldnt get to the more isolated spots. I loved Portnahaven but the Island is full of gems and very unspoilt. Excellent birding at Loch Gruinart, from the hides.Museum in Port Charlotte well worth a visit just across the road from the hostel. Port Charlotte village has a couple of hostelries, they both do food and there was music one night. Also it is right beside Loch Indaal so lovely views across to Bowmore.
