Having stayed recently at your sister hotel @ Elcot Park we were really looking forward to The Barnsdale. Hadn't stayed before so couldn't compare with it before. Really impressed by both staff , building/rooms and bar/restaurant. Bar was particularly good. Design overall was excellent

Oakham is such a lovely place to wander around. You could start at the Castle Cottage cafe within the castle grounds and see the walls of horseshoes, wander down the high street to the small-but-perfectly-stocked Walkers bookshop and pick up the best pork pie from Leesons butchers or perfect bap from Hoagies next door. Pop into Victoria Hall for art from local artists and watch Oakham's resident potter in action. Lots of independent shops.
The museum is free and was surprising excellent (loved the friendliness of the staff and the good selection of gifts for children and arty people).
There is a market on Wednesday and Saturday - veg and a baker, with florist, fishmonger, butcher, dairy and picture framing among others.
Dog friendly banking hub if you need cash, And so many great pubs!
Recommendations: Jamel's cafe, Sarpech (fancy Indian), Hitchins Barn (fancy English), Mill Street for fancy shops then through to the Maltings for Rocka-Buy Records, Finkey and Dean Street are cute to walk along. The Grainstore brewery do tours which come with a ploughmans, and you'll want to stay local or catch the train home afterwards! Ovation for wine and cocktails. For lounging near a fire, try Wisteria Hotel or the George on the market square.
There seems to be a lot of concerts in the park in the summer (most Sundays), and lots of beer festivals too (CAMRA in the museum, the grainstore pub). The library and the museum have leaflets for what's on. Wednesday lunch you might be able to catch a free Oakham School concert in All Saints Church.
If you are into bird-watching, apparently Rutland Water is one of the best places for it.
Trains don't run on Sunday mornings - one to bear in mind if you want to visit Stamford (which is easiest by train).
Public toilets: Church Street, in the castle or one in the library.

I love the scenery, the wildlife, I'm a walker, so great walks, the town of oakham has everything u need, but what I like most is it's not commercialised, still a pretty little market town.i also used train & went to peterborough, the parking at the station was only £2.50 for the whole day. I had lunch one day at a lovely little cafe tucked in the corner of the market Square called Hungry Birds.

I have travelled to oakham for over 9 years now, I live in Lincoln but have workshop and customer in Oakham . I am still finding new things when I’m there and the surrounding areas including Rutland waters always worth a trip
The room was fantastic with views of the Rutland Water, the breakfast was cooked to order and very good selection of hot and cold food. We ate in the restaurant every evening and thoroughly enjoyed the food.
and the service we enjoyed everything about the Hotel it was a perfect break for five nights with plenty to see and do surrounding the hotel. The rooms were nice and cosy and warm which we appreciated very much
Beautiful house in a very small village but not far from restaurants and sightseeing locations. The room was clean and beautiful and cozy, the bathroom clean and quite large. Our host provided all the things we could have needed. She was so welcoming friendly and helpful. The area had beautiful scenery it was a very relaxing and quiet evening. We only stayed one night but hope to return again soon.
Maybe a strange coincidence, but a review by ‘ROGER -COUPLE ‘ was written on the same day this ROGER vacated, how convenient !
The property was well situated in Market Street for our cause to be close to Rutland Water and a three day fishing holiday. The car park was some distance to continually remove and carry our gear to the Hotel each day. Lammy the waiter was the most cheerful of people.
Lovely quiet location , within walking distance of shops, pubs and restaurants but also quiet walks. Lovely outside space to sit when the weather was nice and ample space for a family with growing teenagers to share. Well placed for Rutland Water but also ideally located to visit nearby cities and towns.
Excellent staff who were very polite, friendly and helpful immediately we arrived. Beautifully refurbished hotel which was very comfortable and clean with a lovely area to sit outside at the rear. Great breakfast selection and efficient staff. A lovely stay and would definitely return.
We were able to contact Tracey easily to access the property and for other queries. She always answered emails promptly.
It was well located for Rutland Water and surrounding towns/villages.
The property was bright and airy, spacious enough for 3 people and well resourced.
The situation of the hotel in relation to Rutland Water and proximity to other villages. The friendly staff who all went the extra mile to make our stay so enjoyable.
The room which was very comfortable and so quiet.
The breakfasts which were excellent.
The very kind chap from the restaurant next door. He was part of the hotel but it's an "unmanned" hotel, so I think he was covering for a manager (flood conditions in local area making travel difficult- that was my reason for having to book the hotel!)
Well located near a park and grocery stores. 10 minute walk into the centre of Oakham. The two bedrooms with double beds were separated by the living floor so provided privacy (we didn't use the other two top floor bedrooms).
This is a delightful apartment to launch your Oakham visit. Everything is a quick walk out the door. The apartment was quiet at night and very comfortable. Having the extra space made our visit terriffic.
Really lovely setting besides Rutland Water - beautifully looked after beer garden and courtyard. Hotel is a former stable block for the the sadly now demolished Normanton House so has loads of character.
Large comfortable bed and located centrally in Oakham. With good access to the surrounding area and close to Rutland Water. The assigned parking space at the car park was also very helpful.
Good location. Pleasantly decorated hotel, clean & tidy. No maintenance issues. Had everything we needed. Good value for money, nice breakfast, pleasant staff.
a perfect hotel break with dogs. Very lovely atmosphere. Great staff - friendly and caring. Good location re Rutland Water etc. Would definitely return.
