Oakham is such a lovely place to wander around. You could start at the Castle Cottage cafe within the castle grounds and see the walls of horseshoes, wander down the high street to the small-but-perfectly-stocked Walkers bookshop and pick up the best pork pie from Leesons butchers or perfect bap from Hoagies next door. Pop into Victoria Hall for art from local artists and watch Oakham's resident potter in action. Lots of independent shops.
The museum is free and was surprising excellent (loved the friendliness of the staff and the good selection of gifts for children and arty people).
There is a market on Wednesday and Saturday - veg and a baker, with florist, fishmonger, butcher, dairy and picture framing among others.
Dog friendly banking hub if you need cash, And so many great pubs!
Recommendations: Jamel's cafe, Sarpech (fancy Indian), Hitchins Barn (fancy English), Mill Street for fancy shops then through to the Maltings for Rocka-Buy Records, Finkey and Dean Street are cute to walk along. The Grainstore brewery do tours which come with a ploughmans, and you'll want to stay local or catch the train home afterwards! Ovation for wine and cocktails. For lounging near a fire, try Wisteria Hotel or the George on the market square.
There seems to be a lot of concerts in the park in the summer (most Sundays), and lots of beer festivals too (CAMRA in the museum, the grainstore pub). The library and the museum have leaflets for what's on. Wednesday lunch you might be able to catch a free Oakham School concert in All Saints Church.
If you are into bird-watching, apparently Rutland Water is one of the best places for it.
Trains don't run on Sunday mornings - one to bear in mind if you want to visit Stamford (which is easiest by train).
Public toilets: Church Street, in the castle or one in the library.

I love the scenery, the wildlife, I'm a walker, so great walks, the town of oakham has everything u need, but what I like most is it's not commercialised, still a pretty little market town.i also used train & went to peterborough, the parking at the station was only £2.50 for the whole day. I had lunch one day at a lovely little cafe tucked in the corner of the market Square called Hungry Birds.

The location ideal for getting to know the area and only 5 miles from the attractive town of Oakham and easy driving distance to Melton Mowbray and Stamford. The little villages in Rutland are very attractive and well looked after. Plenty of pub/restaurants. Great area for a few days break.
The room was fantastic with views of the Rutland Water, the breakfast was cooked to order and very good selection of hot and cold food. We ate in the restaurant every evening and thoroughly enjoyed the food.
and the service we enjoyed everything about the Hotel it was a perfect break for five nights with plenty to see and do surrounding the hotel. The rooms were nice and cosy and warm which we appreciated very much
Very efficient staff, especially Daniel. Wonderful welcome on arrival. Nothing was too much trouble. Lovely, cosy public areas with open fires. A steady stream of customers providing good atmosphere. Easy parking at rear of hotel. Excellent food, huge breakfast. Quiet bedroom in the courtyard area. Super power shower. Nice town to explore. Couldn't fault it. Well done everyone at the Admiral Hornblower.
Very warm welcome from Bennie when we arrived. The food we had for dinner was really tasty, and served promptly, and with a smile. Our room was very warm and the bed very comfortable.Tea and coffee provided, and the use of a kettle as well as coffee maker. Bar area and dining area a little cold, but it was very cold outside! All in all we enjoyed our stay, and would stay again.
Fabulous old rectory in a quiet village outside Oakham. Friendly, helpful host. Easy parking. Good WiFi. Comfortable bed in a spacious, en-suite room overlooking the gravel driveway. No traffic noise so slept soundly. Best breakfast I've ever had in a B&B! Great value for money and highly recommended.
Excellent staff who were very polite, friendly and helpful immediately we arrived. Beautifully refurbished hotel which was very comfortable and clean with a lovely area to sit outside at the rear. Great breakfast selection and efficient staff. A lovely stay and would definitely return.
Lovely old quirky hotel, decor of the bar area is fabulous and comfortable, staff very helpful and friendly, dog friendly which is great 😃
Lovely big room and big bed, central location to some lovely little shops, bars and park.
Oh wow!!! Breakfast is just AMAZING, a must have
The very kind chap from the restaurant next door. He was part of the hotel but it's an "unmanned" hotel, so I think he was covering for a manager (flood conditions in local area making travel difficult- that was my reason for having to book the hotel!)
Breakfast was not provided. Was it supposed to have been?
This was not a hotel. It was just "rooms" that were difficult to find. I received no instructions on how to get into the room.
The room was cold with no way of activating the radiator.
Location was fine, plenty of car parking, evening meal was good but expensive and because we had to leave early in the morning the hotel would not cook us a breakfast but did provide us with breakfast things to make in our room.
This is a delightful apartment to launch your Oakham visit. Everything is a quick walk out the door. The apartment was quiet at night and very comfortable. Having the extra space made our visit terriffic.
I have stayed here a few times now. This time to sail locally; fabulous food, smiling/welcoming staff. Room very comfortable. No hesitation in staying again when in the area.
Good location for visiting Rutland Water and Oakham. Comfortable room, clean and warm. Excellent breakfast and lovely lounge/ dining areas. A great place to stay
Good location. Pleasantly decorated hotel, clean & tidy. No maintenance issues. Had everything we needed. Good value for money, nice breakfast, pleasant staff.
Friendly staff, beautiful nature around hotel, kids enjoyed playground and animals (rabbits, squirrels, birds). Dinner with sunset view was something special ;)
