The town itself was not inspiring.

The town itself was not inspiring. WE only spent a short time in town. WE stayed a few miles ouside and the surrounding countryside was very nice. Good location to explore the island - although the size of the IoW means any base is never far from anywhere!

Newport was not dominated by a shopping mall, and there was a good variety of shops. There were some pleasant open spaces. The bus service to other towns on the Isle of Wight were good. However, the public toilets had not been cleaned for quite a long time.

There is plenty to see around Newport Isle of Wight.

There is plenty to see around Newport Isle of Wight. There is the Owl and Monkey Haven with a good cafe and play area. Butterfly World is fun for all ages a cafe there as well. Busy Bee garden centre has lots to see over several floors and an excellent cafe with very friendly helpful staff. Chris rook Castle has plenty of history but best to go on a dry day. Newport itself has plenty of shops but if you want something a little different then Cowes is the place to go. If you are self catering then there are all the usual supermarkets. Quarr Abbey is a lovely place and the history behind it is well worth finding out. Again a fantastic cafe.

This is the county town of the Isle of Wight and, as such, has all the facilities you need. We based ourselves in Newport because we toured the island by bus and IoW has one of the best bus services in the UK. Most buses are double-deckers (go upstairs and see everything as you travel) and all routes round the island start from Newport. Newport remains vibrant despite troubled times for the retail and hospitality industry. Plenty of pubs, cafes (for afternoon tea), restaurants and shops. Not the prettiest of places, but you have the rest of the island to explore if you want "pretty".

Lovely old hotel with character which I like. The room was very comfortable and spacious. Minutes walk to the centre for pubs and restaurants. Plenty of street parking but take note this means from 18.00-08.00 it's a £2.00 charge and daily rates apply. Staff really friendly. There is a bar but with no on tap beverages so worth a trip to Wetherspoons as it's a converted church. Didn't have breakfast there but plenty of places to eat within minutes from the hotel.

The Wheatsheaf is well located in Newport with most facilities within walking distance in the town and Newport is centrally located on the Island. The Hotel staff were very friendly and did their best to be helpful. Apart from our wall heater, the rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable, the breakfast was served in a timely manner and was very good. I actually like this Hotel but would only consider staying here again in the summer months.
