The Lion, hotel in Mistley

The Lion has a garden, terrace, a restaurant and bar in East Bergholt. With free WiFi, this 5-star hotel offers room service and a 24-hour front desk.

It is located in the middle in a beautiful village. Everything was very newly done with thick carpets and fantastic quality carpentry everywhere. Food was delicious and staff very friendly and helpful There appeared to be Mouse Man stools by the bed - I felt a bit wrong putting my cup of tea on it!

A quaint old world hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Very creaky floors. Comfortable bed and a warm spacious room. . The clothes rail in the wardrobe of my room was too high for me to hang my clothes up. I had to lay them across the armchair. I would have preferred a slide rail in the shower as I do not like the overhead downpour

Very busy quaint hotel set beside a river, staff were always friendly and happy to help, it’s a great little hotel to stay for a few days sightseeing. Maybe rooms are on the small side but otherwise a very pleasant stay.

    The hotel itself is exceptional.

The hotel itself is exceptional. And it's a ten minute stroll along the estuary to Manningtree. I had lunch at Lucca which seems to be also owned by Mistley Thorn. Again a high standard of food, wine and attentive service. I also visited the North House Gallery in Manningtree which officially opens only on Saturdays but I was able to arrange an appointment on Friday by texting the owner. Well worth a visit. Excellent exhibition called "Shore' with six different artists. Mistley on the main road is pretty unsightly right now, with high fencing erected on the road edge by the estuary.

What a heavenly Oasis, the Mistley Thorn is and has all the ingredients for a break from the weekly hubbub. We stayed in the suite, if this is available it’s a winner, immaculate, choice of bathroom, one with bath and the other shower. Whilst it did have a sloping ceiling one side, I felt that this did nothing but enhance the charm. Some previous reviews mentioned the noise, we experienced the total opposite, it was tranquil….well except for the geese in the morning. We dined in the restaurant on Saturday evening, great vibe and fully booked (so booking is recommended) and whilst the menu is predominantly fish (surely to be expected), there were several other options available. I can thoroughly recommend, Oysters, pea croquettes and the fish bowl. My partner had the tapenade, king prawns, and the Sea Bass, all immaculately presented and delicious. The restaurant was a superb experience, the service was excellent, all staff knowledgeable about the offering and their suggestions were well received especially the Chocolate and Hazelnut desert. Breakfast again was delightful, a good variety, accompanied by good coffee. Overall this was a delightful stay and thoroughly recommend to all
