Good place to use as a base to explore some of the Orkneys.

Good place to use as a base to explore some of the Orkneys. The cathedral is stunning and worth a visit to Kirkwall (if you are in the area) just for that. Sadly, no coffee shops seemed to open until 9:30 at the earliest, anywhere. This is a problem for early risers :-)

We went to Kirkwall mainly for the Whiskey distilleries and golf. We visited the Orkney Golf Club twice and had a great time there (special thanks to Bruce and Neill). We rented 2 bikes and took a local ferry to Shapinsay where we explored the island by bicycle, which was great as there is almost no car traffic on the island. For great food I can definitely recommend "Helgi" a great little place with local dishes and drinks. However make sure to book in advance as they only have 12 tables and were fully booked every night of the week and we were lucky to get our reservation in.

    My visit was very short.

My visit was very short. I went to connect with neolithic and nordic Orkney, mainly the stone circles, and with the beauty of Yesnaby. I was also blessed to be able to cross over to the Broch of Birsay. I left filled with awe and wonder. Sooo much beauty! The ring of Brodgar is magnificent. I highly recommend visiting Maeshowe. That was an unexpected treat. I did not have time to enjoy Kirkwall. I wanted to visit St. Magnus cathedral and see the Ness of Brodgar excavation findings in the museum. I didn't even have time to eat. I also wanted to visit Stromness. Next time! Orcadians are wonderful people. Incredibly friendly. Loved it all. Since I was flying in and the following day out of Kirkwall and the car rental company was also in Kirkwall it made sense to book accomodation in that town.

Kirkwall caters well for its visitors with an array of quality shops selling a range of local products. The coffee shops are close by and coffee is tasty. There a lot of things to see as you wander through the town. The Cathedral dominates the town and is full of history alongside the bishops and earls house. However there is so much more to explore outwith Kirkwall if you are interested in Neolithic structures, naval warfare history or the wonderful sights of nature.

A visit to Kirkwall Church is beautiful & full of history the place is so calming when you enter those huge church doors. This is my 2nd visit Orkney loved it. They have quaint streets dating back to 1200's or more but with the Lidl, Tesco + Co-op supermarkets you can get all you need at these stores. We went to excellent restaurant The Ayre Hotel for fish & chips + seafood platter it was excellent + staff were excellent very friendly we are from Catering too it was great good !! Staff very kind and helpful and went the extra mile to help me. It’s only a few minutes walking distance from shops. If coming via boat to Island, the peer is two miles away. Do arrange a taxi in advance. The hotel looks over the bay. I would definitely stay again. They also allowed me to leave my luggage after check out while exploring the shops as there are no left luggage facilities in Kirkwall.

Location was excellent close to downtown Kirkwall but on the outskirts of town, quiet, with safe parking, and easy access to the many amazing sights of Orkney. The house was very well appointed throughout with everything that one could possibly need.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was grateful for the slightly later check out time which meant that I could get to parkrun and then shower afterwards. I liked the style and decor of the rooms and around the hotel - clean and simple.
