Hotel is in process of refurbishment (not mentioned until we arrived) but it did not trouble us. Our room was all new. Have stayed here several times to visit Maldon ( 20 mins drive approx) and the nearby Marks Hall Estate. Both lovely places.

Colchester is a vibrant town with a wealth of history.
Colchester is a vibrant town with a wealth of history. If you are into history you should definitely visit the castle (and go on the tour up to the battlements and down to the vaults where you can see the basement of the temple of Claudius which was destroyed during Boudicca's uprising). There are a multitude of quite stunning timber framed buildings in the Dutch quarter and a lot to see pertaining to the Siege of Colchester (1648) during the Civil Wars (the Siege House is worth seeing and finding all of the 17th century musket ball holes inside and out of its fabric!) There's also the foundations of one of the earliest Christian churches (Roman!) to see, St. Botolph's Priory remains and the remains of St. John's Abbey gatehouse. There is also a number of medieval churches (including Holy Trinity which incorporates a lot of Roman tiles in its beautiful tower) and the massive "Jumbo" water tower. The Tourist Information can point you towards all of these things and provide you with a map.
Oh yes there are lots of shops to see - both chain stores and little independent shops... if that's your thing!

I liked the town and its history.
I liked the town and its history. However, I found the prices in pubs to be excessive, regarding both food and drink. The portion I received in the George was very small, especially considering I'd paid twenty-four pounds for it. It consisted of a tiny piece of fish, three mussels, a little broccoli, and two very small pieces of potato. In the Castle, I paid eighteen ponds fifty for a pint, with pie and mash. The price of a pint in most pubs was what you might expect to pay in London.

Colchester is a brilliant town to visit, you have the old and new part to walk round ranging from a good collection of shops and food outlets to browse and walking round the various churches, castle, monastery ruins and lovely parks.
The town is within walking distance of both train stations, taxis are plenty also. Take a good pair of comfy walking attire for feet as you will be walking up and down gradients!! A great place to visit on the local bus is Manningtree where there is a antiques emporium to walk round with a great cafe in the high street for food.
If visiting Colchester for the first time I recommend staying at least a minimum of 4 days as their is a lot to see of interest. Lots of charity shops too!!
For families do visit Colchester Zoo which is a great day out, this can be reached by bus also if you do not drive.

I find Colchester a fascinating place with all kinds of facilities to suit different tastes. I personally very much enjoy learning about its history. It also has good shopping areas and restaurants.
Due to the train strike by Greater Anglier (30 Sep 2023 to 04 Oct 2023), I had to stay in Colchester for a few nights for work purpose. When I checked in, I was greeted by Roland (the hotel manager). He helped me settle down in my lovely ensuite bedroom and enriched me with the history of Colchester. He provided excellent customer service for all the guests of the hotel. This hotel is highly recommended, and I hope everyone who goes to Colchester Boutique Hotel will feel comfortable and delighted.
The location was really useful for using the station to get into Colchester town during the day and a couple of stops along in the evening to Hythe for visiting friends. Saved a fortune on taxis and meant no driving after a long journey. Really comfy bed and excellent power shower. Useful amenities in the room fridge and microwave and good selection of drinks inc hot choc in addition to the usual tea/coffee. Bottles of water and cartons of juice too.
The room was giant and the general feel to the
Hotel was amazing! The location was perfect. The only thing I would say is to give more indication on where the George parking is, as the area seems to be a one way system which doesn’t lead you to the high street using google maps but other than that this is defo a spot to hit!!!! We loved it that much we booked a night to stay at the sister hotel for another night (the George hotel).
Cosy, comfortable hotel with period features within walking distance of the historic centre Colchester. Well appointed rooms. All the staff were welcoming and provided very good levels of customer service. Bar open in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. Car park on site was a little tight in places, but there was always a space available. Would definitely visit again.
Excellent value. Stayed one night in a standard double. Location spot on, short drive to Colchester and it's environs, plenty of parking at the hotel, pleasant ambience inside and out. Very helpful staff on reception and in the restaurant, where we had some very nice food from the starter menu when we arrived.
Bit concerned about booking a hotel on the High Street because we normally goto a country hotel but glad to say it was perfect, location was ideal for mooching round Colchester town. our room was comfortable with air-conditioning, the bar staff were friendly, we ate in the restuarant and the food was lovely.
A great hotel in a lovely setting close to the centre of Colchester and all its amenities. Room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Good tea and coffee making facilities in the room, also a complimentary mini bar fridge. Toiletries were lovely too.
Well located boutique hotel in the centre of Colchester.
Lovely downstairs bar & restaurant.
Rooms are cosy, clean & comfortable with good shower.
Staff are welcoming and helpful.
Great freshly cooked breakfast.
Good value for money.
The location of the place.
Loved the building too
and the beds and room, loved that we had out own door to the main road so we didn't have to walk to the reception as we were round the back of the hotel.
Beautiful hotel with a rich history in a fantastic location, right in the centre of Colchester. The staff were lovely and helpful, particularly Angela and John. We will definitely be staying again.
Great location in the city centre. There is paid parking behind the hotel. The hotel itself is gorgeous and rooms were spacious and comfortably designed. Overall a very enjoyable experience.
Perfect location close to Colchester Town centre. Quiet at night.
Had adequate facilities. Very clean. Spacious living area with dining table. Would highly recommend and would book again.
we’ve stayed here a few times. It is a jewel. It is by far the cleanest hotel I’ve ever stayed in and the standard is always exactly the same. Perfect and pristine.
