The George Hotel, hotel in Askham

The traditional The George Hotel, stands in the very centre of the bustling market town of Penrith on the edge of the Lake District and the North Pennines.

It has its own car park although it is no longer free it is safer than in the street. I like the traditional style of the building. On this visit I had a bigger room and the bathroom door did not stick. I think it had recently been refurbished and was excellent.

The local store was warm and friendly and for a village store exceptionally well stocked. The Queen's head across the road charged £23 for two drinks then at 9pm called it quits for the evening and hurried us up to leave, cleaning around us, cashing up then setting up for breakfast. Doors slammed and bolted by 9.45pm. Woken early by dog walkers enjoying the village.

    A small very quiet village.

A small very quiet village. The pub we stayed in was the only place to stay and eat as the other one is currently closed. There is an open air swimming pool but we didnt use it, as it was fully booked. Askham Hall Gardens is a beautiful place with a lovely little cafe., well worth the small £4 entry fee. Great for peace and quiet and not far to Ullswater.

This is a lovely little village with plenty of places to explore and totally re-charge your batteries. You can either have a nice long walk or drive to nearby places with plenty to do, including scenic boat trips and water sports, and on returning to the village there are two hostelries serving good food and drinks, in front of a roaring fire, where you can totally unwind.

If you like staying in an old inn, in a rural out-of-the way setting, then this is just the place for you. Askham a small, pretty, quiet village with a single grocery shop that you can buy any essentials that you need. We ate at the Punchbowl Inn where we stayed, good food, wine and beer at reasonable prices. There was another pub in the village offering pub meals too. Friendly staff and locals at the Punchbowl Inn, good for dog owners as they allow well-trained dogs into the pub too.
