Surrounded by Normandy countryside, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most damage has been carefully rebuilt, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.
It sits opposite a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is buried here. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations – the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.
Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.
The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.
Booking.com’s range of Caen accommodation includes luxury hotels, cheap B&BS and apartments with parking.

Caen is interesting, it can be seen in a couple of days, museums etc., but is also a good centre for elsewhere. Bayeux (train, forget the bus, the only complaint I have is the bad long distance bus service there, there was no interest in the passengers at all), Ouistreham (good bus links), Deauville and Hornfleur are also within reach although I did not go.
Everywhere you will find D Day museums, those I went to were very good. Bayeux, Pegasus Bridge (recommended, walk down the canal from Ouistreham and the Bunker) also the Caen Memorial which will take much of the day.

A fascinating city with a mixture of ancient history (castle and churches), more recent history (D-Day memorials) and modern shopping and entertainment complexes. Easy to get around on foot in the centre but transport - buses and trains - also easy to navigate.

I have been to Caen few times.
I have been to Caen few times. Mainly to visit Memorial Sites. This time it was the British Memorial site in Ver-sur-Mer where the British artist Anthony Gormley had exhibited abt 1,440 statues on the occasion of ghe 80th Anniversary of D-Day : 6 June 2024. It was very peaceful and moving.

Calm, friendly, interesting, historic, wet!
Calm, friendly, interesting, historic, wet! Great place to learn history. A little bit daunting at night in the town on the first few nights, although it amounted to nothing and was perfectly fine. A growing homeless community? Much like many other European cities now.
Met interesting and friendly people. Transport to other towns requires planning ahead. Trains ran efficiently when I was there. Bayeaux was easy Falaise was great to fill in my knowledge of historical events and I’d visit again! Self catering( food allergies), but plenty of lovely looking eateries. It’s an expensive city for shopping. Plenty of choices for supermarket shopping , but we had access to a car which made a big difference to our stay. There was a street market one day 😀.

The city is friendly and it is easy and cheap to get around using public transport. There are good restaurants, we can highly recommend Le Carlotta, great food, wine and a warm welcome.
Tips for visiting Normandy sites.
We used the 12 bus to visit Pegasus Bridge and Ranville Cemetery. Do not get on the 12 EX as this is the express bus and does not use the same route!
However, reaching the British Memorial at Ver-Sur-Mer from Caen in September proved impossible on public transport and a taxi was needed.
We loved the hotel and the staff were excellent and very helpful. The room was clean and we all slept well. There was plenty of parking it was super easy to get to. We really enjoyed our breakfast and there was plenty to chose from. We will stay here again if ever we are around Caen. Lovely restaurant next door was a bonus.
Perfect hotel for the ferry, with a great restaurant next door as well. Located on the périphérique of Caen
Not a beautiful hotel but highly functional.. plenty of parking, space, reception, lifts. Restaurant for breakfast.
Asked for a double and a twin room on the same floor.. was accommodated no problem.
This hotel provided an excellent location to stay the night before boarding a ferry at Caen. The 6.30 start for breakfast was very useful for an early start... and they did offer grab and go too.
We were given a lovely welcome and the hotel was new, clean and comfortable.
Parking excellent.
Since we were on a cycling holiday we look for hotels which offer secure overnight storage for our bikes. Best Western Moderne has a large underground car park where our bikes were safely stored. The staff we very helpful and friendly.
Everything. Especially the staff, so nice.
Had a massage at the spa…heavenly.
Location. Caen is a gorgeous city and this is a perfect hotel to explore it.
