A very simply hotel right in the middle of town. No heating or air con in the room, which was surprising given the price, and when we stayed was very cold. Also the rooms at the front are right onto the main road so a little noisy. Great breakfast in a lovely room at the back

Great city, very friendly. The city was effectively rebuilt after the floods in 2010. The colonial style architecture is maintained and the houses painted in vibrant colours. The museum Oswaldo Cruz is worth a visit, and there is a shop/ museum in the centre that displays artefacts from slavery. A sharp reminder of the brutality of slavery in Brazil. Incredible.
