For those of you who are familiar with The Sound of Music, this is the original location where the boating accident of Julie Andrews and the children took place. In the film the boat overturns and they all end up in the water of the lake.
The castle and the grounds are marvellous! It is difficult to put in words the magnificence of the location, the lake, the castle, the flowers and the fauna!
Our bedroom was not in the main castle but in the adjacent property and it was big and very comfortable. We had a view over the Salzburg Fortress, beautiful!
The bathroom was big, spacious and with a big window that we could open for fresh air.
The castle had no restaurant so for dinner we went to nearby restaurants suggested by the staff or you could go into town.
Breakfast was the only meal served at the castle and it was sumptuous and scrumptious! We were seated in the Venetian Room, a beautiful, awesome room painted and decorated in Venetian style. Again, impossible to describe the marvel of this place!
There are a lot of walks you can do around the area, in the park itself, outside the castle and around the whole perimeter of the lake or go into town. From the castle the walk takes more or less 30 minutes to reach old town Salzburg, and the walk on pedestrian and cycle path was wonderful. We walked among trees and flowers and then little paths with canals and houses, picturesque. And always overlooked by the fortress. Cyclists are very polite in Salzburg, they announce their arrival and they always, always thank you for getting out of their way, if you, like me, sometimes forget you are on a cycle path.
