- Everybody working there was really kind and ready to support us with any request.
- Food was excellent. The "grill-abend" was simply amazing.
- Hotel is equipped with everything needed for the families: Kinderwagen, Kindertrage Rucksack and most interesting (at least for us) E-Bikes that we used to have a tour all around (going even to the next village).
- Landscape is really nice. The sound of waterfalls and all the beautiful nature around, including the high peaks is relaxing and giving a feeling of peace.
- The possibility to have Kinderbetreuung half a day during the week is definitively good for both children and parents
- The Spielplatz especially, but the Kinderbereich as well, are great for kids and swimming pool is a good alternative when rainy is coming.
This family-run hotel enjoys a very quiet location in the centre of Matrei in East Tyrol, offering a perfect atmosphere for guests looking for an upscale 3-star hotel.

It is a small village with more or less any shops you need.
It is a small village with more or less any shops you need. There are many hiking paths to enjoy and because it is early in the season there are no crowds and bikes around. You have to check the little paths because sometimes the owner of the land just closes the path and you have to make a bigger round.
There are castle ruins to be visited, huts and beautiful forest paths with stunning views.

The town itself is tiny and there is nothing to do (although there is a supermarket, gas station and bakery). But the hiking possibilities are limitless, as are the excursions you can make in the Hohe Tauern area. We also found some nice restaurants in the area.
Although the appartment itself is not new, it's cosy, warm and has a lot of space (we slept in the one with 3 bedrooms). The furnitures and equipment again are not so new, but everything is totally sufficient for a one-two week stay. The view from the balcony is absolutely beautiful! The landlords are really kind and helpful! We had no issues and love the stay in Gastehaus Bergwald :)
We initially booked this place for summer 2020, but the COVID pandemic made it's own changes to our travel plans. Gästehaus Hanser allowed to cancel 2020 booking for free even the deadline was over.
Booked again for 2021 summer and didn't have to be disappointed. Lovely house, hospitable host and magnificent surroundings -- this is the real Austria as someone said.
Super nice hosts, there were separate bathrooms for each room, great location about 10 minutes from the ski slopes. Supermarket and bakery within walking distance, very clean, beautiful view from the rooms, spacious living room to sit together, well equiped kitchen. Can definitely recommend.
Very cozy and comfortable appartment, pretty big for just us. Nice and well equipped, in a very nice and calm neighbourhood. There were beautiful small calfs in the rooms in the ground floor so I guess perfect for children in Summer.
We had a very large room with bathroom, kitchen and balcony; too bad that we spent only one night in the structure but it is certainly very comfortable and welcoming. From the center of Virgen is about 15 minutes walk.
Located on a beautiful south slope of the mountain, full of sun and a lot of light in the appartment. A lot of walking/running trails around; close to the village ski run and the centre of Virgen.
Everything. Frau Kratzer is supernice, the room is sparking clean also the bathroom.
You have a large garden. Breakfast is excelent.
I can fully recommend. Even for family of 2-3.
