Chama is a beautiful location.
Chama is a beautiful location. Seems very laid back and definitely not a tourist trap. No big town name brand restaurant, shops or hotels. The scenic train is the biggest attraction. We were there for a elk hunting trip so did very little around town. If you are interested in good fishing or hunting in a quiet and beautiful location Chama is perfect.

Been here few times. But Fall shows her colors of splendor.
Been here few times. But Fall shows her colors of splendor. Came up to do the Cumbres train as I had never done it. Hit the season perfectly. NM and Colorado never cease to amaze me with the beautiful vista's. You can see for miles. You have now the fall colors and amazing rock formations. I know COVID hit small towns hard. Seems Chama is really struggling. . I'd love to see it prosper. When you are there peruse the few shops. Buy from the locals, help the economy. Saw deer and Elk. Great getaway

While we were there the restaurant hours were hard to figure out. Online websites would state the hours and if they were open. Drive to the restaurant and its not open. Some days its open some days closed. Our favorite place to eat was Chama Local. Really good pizza. Boxcare Cafe was way overpriced and if you can't cook a simple hamburger without overcooking it you need to find a new cook or close the place. The quality of food did not come close to the high price for each plate. Restaurants in general were disappointing.
The train is a great thing to occupy a day.
Chama is a great place to visit but it seems the town has not progressed much the last 40 years. A town in that location should offer better restaurants and shopping (which is pretty much non existent).

Chama is picturesque, and with the narrow-gauge railroad, is an attractive destination. However, and unfortunately, the restaurant situation is abysmal. There are fewer than 6 options in Chama and 4 of them close at 3 PM. Of the two that remain open, one is a dingy, dirty bar setting with substandard food and the other is an average (at best) restaurant with odd and unpredictable hours. We (along with a number of others) were left shopping at the local grocery store looking for meal options that didn't require preparation. This town could a much better job taking care of visitors. Like so many others, it feels like a dying little town.

We had a great time on our train trip and cannot say enough good things about the friendly and helpful staff at the Cumbres and Toltec railroad. They saved our bacon when we were stranded at the train station. The registration staff at the Elkhorn Lodge told us that they would pick us up and the restaurant next door was open. Imagine our disappointment and dismay when we arrived and no one answered the phone at the lodge or returned my panicky messages. Abby, the station manager gave us a ride and let us know that we could get a pizza delivered from Felicianos. She also picked us up in the morning and we had coffee down the street.

The motel is very nice furnishings are very nice the beds are very very comfortable and it’s very close to the activities we were doing. Staff was great. Only issue was the water in the town was on drinkable and not safe. However they offered us plenty of bottled water which is unfortunate but necessary. we would stay there again if we were ever near Chama. I couldn’t drink it
There was no Continental breakfast but the managers were very helpful telling us where we would be able to find a restaurant or grocery store since there was a refrigerator and microwave in the room. Chama Trails Motel was near everything we wanted to do while we were in Chama.
The location was perfect for our needs, which was nearness to the train and cheaper than the nearby options. The folks at the desk were friendly and informative. The room everything we needed as far as functionality, soaps, and entertainment.
Nice comfortable room with good beds. People who work there are very friendly. Facilities and atmosphere are nice- my kids met a big group of people playing volleyball on the hotel's court and had a really fun evening meeting new people.
Railroad theme. Definitely an old hotel, but clean room with comfortable beds. It is but a walk across the street to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Easy check in and check out. Good WIFI signal.
The only complaint was that Chama did not have traditional nearby restaurant open. They were closed and/or did not accomodate the train schedule.
The Loft was exceptional. We enjoyed. It very much.
So lovely and comfortable. I stayed on the eve of closing on a house in Chama. So while I will likely not need to return, I will happily recommend this to family and friends who may be in town.
Elk horn Cafe personally is the best breakfast spot around ! Fair price good size servings . Friendly service bright homey ambiance. I definitely will be back
