Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.
Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti.
There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for.
This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ...
The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.
The amenities were incredible and the staff was super helpful. I would absolutely recommend this place for a short stay in Coimbra. The location is prime and the overall vibe of the hotel is very clean, neat and contemporary. I wouldn’t call it cheap but I wouldn’t call it expensive either. If it’s within your budget you should definitely try it. Although we stayed only for one night I can absolutely see myself staying for a few more nights next time we come to Coimbra to visit.
We were received with a warm and friendly greeting by the staff and offered an upgrade at a very reasonable price difference. When I compared the room, the size was more comfortable and the view was amazing. The hotel offers a very nice breakfast and at night it has a light menu with drinks. Their rooftop area is amazing! Perfect for couples and I highly recommend it. I heard through the grapevine, soon there will be a new Oslo hotel not too far!
The location was quite good. There was a cafe Coimbra Doce across the road which served nice meals, with courteous staff, some speaking English. There was a launderette 3 minutes away, and a Continente supermarket two minutes away. A large post office one minute away. The town centre was within walking distance, and bus services in front of the hotel. Hot water was great. Electric kettle and fridge in the room was convenient. Breakfast was good too.
It has been out absolute favourite stay in Portugal. The apartment is in the perfect location. you couldn’t get any closer to the university and many of the main sights. The view from the apartment was unbeatable. On top of there was a lovely bottle of green wine and a snack to welcome us. This extra touch made us feel so welcome. I would recommend this apartment to anyone going to Coimbra. We wish we could’ve stayed longer.
The property is well situated between the University and the old town. The building is from the 1800’s- so cool. Not sure if the stone walls are from the original building - awesome nevertheless. We thought it was great value. They brought us breakfast to the room- good variety of buns, scrambled eggs, yogurts and fruit. Great views of the city of Coimbra.
Will definitely recommend this hotel.
Hotel Vitoria is conveniently located, exceptionally clean but simple, the staff are really helpful and welcoming and more than willing to give us tips to enhance our time in Coimbra. For some reason, no doubt a fault of mine, only one room came with breakfast so we, in the double room, paid for our breakfast, which was varied and very good. I would recommend this hotel without condition.
We were travelling through Spain and Portugal and wanted to stop somewhere that would allow us to chill, re-charge the batteries, enjoy a good meal and not have to pay an extortionate price. This hotel met every expectation for us.
Great facilities, friendly service and a fantastic meal in the restaurant.
Really easy to find just a few kilometres from the motorway.
Loved this small hotel. Clean beautiful room. Lovely linens. Efficient and friendly staff. Excellent dinner in their garden restaurant. One of our favorite meals traveling through Portugal. Had the tuna and the fish. Lobby is so cool. Loved the vibe.
Breakfast buffet was delicious. Fruit, eggs breads, cheeses, meats. Good coffee options. Yum.
The size, interior and equipment were very good, but the staff's respondence and views from all the windows were splendid. It locates in the centre of the touristy area, but the apartment was cozy and quiat. There are excellent restaurants nearby. One restaurant in the alley behind the apartment becomes our best restaurant in Portugal.
The location ais great, very central! As Coimbra is quite small is a perfect place to stay for a weekend. The studio was cleaned, and has basic thing in the kitchen so enough to cook few basic meals. Perfect for a weekend or a pitstop while travelling trough Portugal. Also, there was an AC in the studio which helped a lot.
The location was EXCELLENT! Just don’t use GPS to find the apartment if you’re driving. Have the hotel Oslo staff show you the way. We’ll stock and lots of space. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Rita and the blonde woman at hotel Oslo reception (sorry I did not get your name!) we’re both fabulous and friendly.
We love the room they offered to us on the top (5th) floor with the beautiful view of the old town (Coimbra) !
The parking is also easy following the instructions given by the hotel staff. The location is great that we could easily cross the street to reach the old town.
The rooms are large, comfortable, and extremely clean. The breakfast was fantastic, everything was fresh, and the outdoor space was perfect. The staff was always willing to help and give advice about the stay. The hotel is right next to the Coimbra train station.
Is not the first time I stay at Tivoli. Is a well located and organized hotel. The team are so efficient and so kind. It seems that everything is possible when you ask something to them. They are professional and this gives me a lot of proud of Coimbra and Portugal.
Location is good, quite close to almost everything. There are a lot of cafes nearby, so there was no problem with breakfast. A lot of free parking lots nearby, but during daytime can be occupied, because of proximity of Portugal dos Pequenitos.
This is a fabulous hotel right on the main pedestrian street in the touristy part of town. The rooms are clean, updated, and very comfortable. This is a bargain for the price and we will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Coimbra.
Beautiful surroundings in a tranquil village. The multiple bedrooms, dishwasher and bright kitchen. The wood burning stove in a beautiful stone room was an added bonus. We enjoyed our long drives discovering this beautiful region of Portugal.
Staff was wonderful and it was a clean hotel. It was located in a more residential part of town easy accessible from Coimbra train station (you have to get the train from Coimbra-B, but it’s a 5 minute ride).
Conveniently located modern hotel on the edge of the historic quarter of Coimbra. We selected this hotel because of driving and availability of parking in the garage below the hotel. Hotel met our needs.
