The Elopura Hotel located on the East Coast of Sabah which also known as “Land below the Wind”. Elopura name itself was the first name of Sandakan when it was found by William B Pryer back in 1879.

First of all, there is no shop to buy the SIM card in Sandakan Airport, the nearest place is 7/11 which is in 5 min by taxi. Next stage of the quest is that you will need to ask someone to share the Wi-Fi with you since you must register your SIM card by yourself online. Perhaps, buying the SIM card in Kota Kinabalu will be the best option.
If you are going to Sukau area, do not consider buying U Mobile SIM card - it will not work there completely.
I would not recommend to have a food at any of restaurants at the seafront: meals will be overpriced and in most of the cases not even edible.
Tours to Bornean bear and orangutan parks will be at least 3x cheaper for you than suggested by TripAdvisor if you will just use Grab taxi to reach it: both parks are located at the same place. Firefly tour is also costly and not really impressive: do not expect to see too much, if you cannot resist to go there.
Pasir Putih Beach could be nice place if the beach was visible under the layers of garbage. Don't recommend to waste your time for it.
There are a lot of beggar kids at the central area. I don't know if they can steal anything, but I guess it makes sense to be careful.

Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good.
We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours.
Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh.
The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.
Hotel is very modern, rooms like new and whole place is spotless. Staff are brilliant, let us check about 6 hours early on 2 separate stays. They open the door for you. Tasty buffet breakfast with lots of choices included. Best hotel I've stayed in Malaysia. I'm surprised doesn't have a higher score/rating. Loads of eating places 5 mins walk away is a bonus. Pool also clean and great to cool off.
Really lovely hotel. The room was large and clean. Everything worked and while the carpet was dated, the room was pretty good value for money. The hotel itself is spread over multiple levels and has a really large pool with numerous cafes and restaurants. The atmosphere is nice with trees everywhere. Buffet breakfast was good.
It was a great location. The facility was very clean. my room had a lot of the original cabinets and they were in very nice condition, very well maintained. The staff was very accommodating. And there was a nice convenience. Store right at the hotel. The ocean was 300 m away. I always felt safe highly recommend.
Beautiful homely GH/house.
1 of the best places have stayed in the whole of Asia. Clean, comfortable and spacious.
Host (Maini) very prompt in her response and also helpful for places to eat.
Would recommend this home to anyone thinking of staying in Sandakan and area.
Thanks
Near Orangutang and Sun bear centre but which is all easily accessible from better hotels so not necessary to stay nearby. The cleaning staff were lovely and very friendly.
Only redeeming factor large clean shower however smells of drains.
We booked last minute and the only room available for our stay was an executive suite. It was a nice spacious room which was great but expensive for Sabah and the facilities/service. The pool was great though and was what made it tbh.
The hotel is well located: near laundromat, convenience stores, several cafe and restaurants. It's also very close to the airport as well as the bus station.
The room was clean and spacious ; bed was super comfortable !
This place was superb! Great location, can walk to sun bears and Sepilok. Food and drink amazing here. Definitely the best place to eat here in Sabah!
loads of wildlife by your cabin. very clean.
Staff were great and good for one night stay. We were heading to Kinabatangn the next morning and this was the best for one night in Sandakan. Good value for money
